I cant think of a time that this has been discussed . The sheet of cardboard that goes from door to door that covers up wiring, steering column and so forth.I have been thinking about finishing it off with carpeting or vynal. It appears to be molded around the steering column so a stright piece of plywood wont work.Thought about putting speakers there but material that is there isn’t strong enough any suggestions.
May 25, 2013 at 6:36 pm #256070Mine must be missing the cardboard, it’s just open under there. For speakers I built a console box of sorts. I needed a place to put garage door opener, sunglasses, cell phone, etc., so the box has a tray on top for loose storage. I recessed a round 6″ speaker on each side. I made the bottom of the box rounded so it would set on the console in front of the shifter under the dash. Just wasted space under there anyway. I think there are a couple pictures where ever the pictures are now. I have trouble finding them.
May 25, 2013 at 9:10 pm #256071Glad you brought it up, Greg. The originals had this piece, and it was covered with rexine (aka vinyl). I been thinking of making one for Bridget but have not got to it yet.
The material I would use is that hardboard stuff they make pegboards out of. Solid, 1/8 think, pretty light, hard, takes staples. Coat it in water-based polyurethane or something (especially the ends) to keep it from rotting, then wrap in vinyl, glued with the 3m upholstery glue.
This would hold modest (4-inch, 6-oz magnet) speakers. But I would not mount them under there. Knees don’t have ears. Montie’s speakers are in a little better spot.
Of course, cutting the shape, getting it the right size, affixing it to something (angled tabs?) under the dash–haven’t thought it all through yet. First step would be a regular cardboard template, I think.
May 25, 2013 at 9:22 pm #256072I think that Ed is talking about tempered masonite. You can get it in lumber yards. Used to be available in two thicknesses: 1/8 & 1/4. I think it still is.
My speakers are mounted on the firewall way up under the dash. My radio an old Kraco and is nothing fancy and not high powered and I have no trouble hearing it at all.May 25, 2013 at 9:55 pm #256073My Duchess is open under the dash.
Never thought about adding anything.I do wish the subject here was related to the actual content of the thread. Just sayin!

I used some hard plastic stuff that I think most auto/boat upholstery places use. It may be as thin as 1/16 in. In any case very strong, but easy to bend, and easy to cut with heavy duty scissors. I think the uphostery guys use it when they do doors and side panels. Instead of trying to cover steering column, I just ran it up to the column, shaped it to fit, and used some of the hardware on the column to secure it. Then used some small “L” shaped brackets from the hardware store to do the front edge at the bottom of the dash. Did the same with a small piece on left of column, which gives me access to my fuse panel. Last step was go to a place like Michaels craft store and get some flocking (not a spelling error…) spray paint. Good Luck! Neil BCWMay 27, 2013 at 10:32 am #256075This sounds like a little illustrated project. Post pics? (I’m usually pretty bad about taking pics as I do stuff).
May 27, 2013 at 5:49 pm #256076Ed, your dashboard pics were pretty good.

Now there’s an image that never entered my mind!
