I just read Allen’s [newkitman] post in another thread .
He has acquired a FiberFab kit still in the box!!! His user name ,New kitman, really fits the situation. It’s almost like going back in time to be able to start with all new ,never assembled parts.Looking forward to following along on his adventure.Hope to see lots of pictures as the work progresses.
August 26, 2010 at 9:16 pm #242045All that and for a very low price. Wonder what the kits went for back in the 80s?

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 26, 2010 at 10:35 pm #242046Allen, I found a price list from Classic Motor Carriages, the company that merged with FiberFab . The envelope it came in was postmarked 1990. The MGTD kit for the VW was priced at $7995.00. The wood rimmed steering wheel, wheel covers ,mahogany dash and guages added an additional $800. to $1000.
To those of us who are really ”in” to these cars ,what you have could be considered priceless. I’m glad this one is going to get the respect it deserves
August 26, 2010 at 10:55 pm #242047So without the wheel covers and the wood rimmed steering wheel my kit would have cost about 8500. Wow that’s way cool especially since I paid less than 300 for it. And no…it’s not for sale. This one’s like my Ghia. It’s staying with me.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 27, 2010 at 7:49 am #242048Allen, For 300 dollars that is the best investment you ever made, if you like building a car. If you don’t like building cars I’ll make an offer of 600. Doubling your investment in a week can’t beat that on Wall Street 🙂
Have fun it will be rewarding to see it come together.
August 27, 2010 at 8:31 am #242049I’m looking forward to getting started. My shop is my backyard. No garage or carport so the work will start when the weather starts to cool off some. Plus I have to get a chassis. I’m looking for a 70 beetle.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 27, 2010 at 9:23 am #242050Take your time and hold out for a good solid chassis. The better the chassis you can find, the easier your job will be.
My Duchess kit was delivered in the fall of 1981. But my search for a donor car lasted months longer. During that time I sat in my office with the Duchess steering wheel making vroom vroom noises!
Ultimately I found the perfect donor Beetle. Freakin’ thing looked like it had been in a rollover! LOL. Faded paint, dents, mismatched fenders, one busted out headlight, you name it. But the pan was straight and rust free!

August 27, 2010 at 10:32 am #242051300 BUCKS!
Great job Allen. The grill alone is worth more than that.
The kit of $8,000, 20 years ago in 1990 currency. I wonder how that computes to today’s $. WOW, awesome find!
August 27, 2010 at 4:29 pm #242052Nice deal, Allen!
I don’t know what ’70 bugs are going for these days, but I think it’s more than $300. Hope you luck into a good one soon.

The one for $300 is the one I bought. The fellow in Fl in the Samba listing still has his white one for sale. It’s been sitting in the weather for a couple of years but it is assembled and on I beleive a 69 or 70 VW chassis.

I might as well admit it now: I’d like to build a front engine kit into something outlaw. Thinking maybe a replica of the first gen. George Beavis Offenhauser car.
Look it up if you’re interested.
My thinking is get a Chevette car, replace the motor with a Quad-4 turned 90 degrees and a T-5 transmission. Rip out that boring F.I. system in favor of a couple of side draft Webers for period-correct high-maintenance fun.
Beef up the brakes. Maybe mess with the suspension as needed.
Remove the front wings, replace the windscreen with some Brooklands aeros, add a rollbar, do up the interior all racy & paint her up like those Cali boys did in the olden days.
Something to give Cory Drake’s Hooptie (seen here about halfway down the page–the car that opens like a Swiss Army Knife) a run for its money.
Anyway, as I’ve got no time and no money, thought I’d put that out there, for inspirational purposes, in case someone wants an excuse to get into that kind of thing.

September 7, 2010 at 6:18 pm #242057I liked james’ comment on non-stainless screws. My migi had no stainless screws anywhere and jus a few brass ones. Even the snaps for the tonneau were plated ferrous material. I’ve been replace-ing everything that shows with stainless. The galvanized 1/4-20 screws that hold the whole thing together don’t rust but they are not very pretty after a few years. I would advise anyone building a new car to get a whole box of stainless 1/4-20 screws with self locking nuts. I like the looks of the button head allen or torx drive better than philips, but they are hard to find at the h/w store.
