I would love to know what that carb intake is and why there seems to be an extra oil cooler.
I see a VW dual port engine with aftermarket 36 HP style fan shroud. It also has vented valve covers on both sides, though it is hard to tell where those vent hoses are vented to… They are typically run to a breather box where some type of filter material helps separate any oil from the vented air, and allows the oil to drain back to the crankcase. Hard to tell exactly what you have from the picture.
I have never seen what appears to be your oil cooler setup and it has me shaking my head. It looks like a factory style doghouse oil cooler with the mounting plate reversed, putting it in front of the fan shroud instead of behind it with the “doghouse” enclosure that would’ve have diverted the airflow from the shroud, through the doghouse (and oil cooler) and out underneath the engine. It makes me wonder if there is an oil cooler of any type underneath/within the fan shroud. If not, what you have is very ineffective, and likely far worse than a stock cooling setup…
More pics of the engine would definitely help…

Slowly coming back from the ashes...April 27, 2015 at 3:56 pm #264233Mary, Mine would act like a dead battery but if I put a charger on it or jumped it from another car it would start fine. Usually would start fine until it sat for a while. Mine battery tested as good. I cleaned the terminals and it help but randomly it turned over real slow. I added a second ground and that solved the problem. Never hurts to have a second ground as you never know when a ground will be lost.
April 29, 2015 at 12:56 pm #264234Thanks for all of the advice and input guys. I want to have it looked at by someone who knows all about it because It obviously needs work done to it and I don’t know a thing about the engine.
Does anyone from PA know who or where I can take it to?April 29, 2015 at 2:28 pm #264235Can you explain to me how I would go about adding a second ground?
April 29, 2015 at 5:19 pm #264236I added another ground cable to the battery terminal. Now the battery has 2 ground wires. Attach the new ground cable to a bolt that will ground to the frame. Do not use the same bolt as the original ground.

I’ve noticed the power indicator light in the dash tends to brighten after I start the car so I don’t know if that means anything is wrong with power flow someplace. My negative cable is mounted under front of car to the VW “tunnel” where it would get a lot of road splash if driven in rain (which it apparently never has). So if your car is a VW chassis maybe it’s also there.LRH2015-04-30 01:49:55
