That’s what I’m hoping for. I’ve never owned a vw before so it’ll be a learning curve! !
Really want to fix it up and site it off…

Does anyone kniw how to get ahold of a wiring book or diagram? It looks like a spider web ubder the dash. Afraid I might have to install a new wiring harness!

Have a look in the Reference Library on left side of the site. There a couple of electrical diagram files you can download that are manufacturer specific. Personally I used the Fiberfab electrical schema as the basis for developing my own wiring diagrams that incorporates use of relays and reduced the load on the switches. Copy has been sent to Paul for posting to reference library but should be subject to peer review before being adopted as plan for rewiring your TDR

    Good to have you here.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, especially since you don’t know VW’s– although this is more about just being stupid than car specific– DO NOT make the same mistake I did if/when changing the gen/alt belt!
I’ll explain… one of the first things I did was replace the old belt, even though the engine supposedly had less than 1200 miles on it, and I neglected to check what torque to use for tightening the pulley nut.
I simply put it back on with the same feel for tightness it took to remove it. This was after also adjusting the number of shims (like thin steel washers) front to middle of the pulley so belt tension would be right.
As it turned out, that nut needed 43 ft/lbs of torque and probably was only half or 2/3 that much before. So pulley loosened in a very short time, a couple hundred miles maybe, and apparently wobbled until it sheared off from what I later found other people saying of such things happening. And before it did the pulley had chewed into the alternator, which unfortunately I thought was a pinging sound from incorrect carburetor or timing adjustment.
Needless to say I wasn’t happy with myself for not doing things the right way. Like carpenters say, measure twice and cut once. Or in other words, my lesson there was learn all I can about whatever I’m going to do, then do it right. Best I can anyhow.
    😉
I partly blame the notion these VW’s are supposed to be simple to work on. Perhaps that breeds laziness, and of course I’m a prime target for that! LOL
