While I???m waiting to paint the rest of
the car I???ve been working on sanding and buffing the stuff we painted black. This is one of those areas that, even
though you research it, watch YouTube videos, and talk to experts you don???t
really know how to do it until you get hands on. Needless to say I had a bit of a learning
curve which subsequently increased the work I needed to do. But I was able to eventually get the feel for
it and the results were awesome. You can see from the picture below that I
have a bit of an assembly line set up.
What I wanted to do was compare the approach for different sizes,
sanding approach, etc. I think I have it
figured out but still have much work to do.After a while my back started giving out
and I grabbed a chair but still felt the consequences that night. But the results are worth it.
Lots to do but making progress.
I???m hoping I can get the rest painted in
the next two weeks./* Style Definitions */

"Drive Happy"November 5, 2012 at 6:33 pm #247418We all have things that we don’t do well. Well, the “worstest” of all the things that I am worst at is body work. I just can’t seem to master it. A long time ago, I had decided to to the prep and primer work on my old MGTF and have a pro shoot the finish on. I took the body parts in for painting 3 times. He gave me instructions and sent me away each time saying “not good enough”. Once, he even sprayed the shiny finish on a fender so that I could see that “it wasn’t good enough”. Finally he said “bring it in, I’ll do it”.
Rocky, if I had known you could do this, I might have bought the house next door to you. I’m jealous.(And I wasn’t even trying to do black which I understand is the hardest.)Royal2012-11-05 18:46:05

X-NONEEverything lined up and we painted the
rest of the car yesterday.I found a paint booth to rent about 2
miles from my home and ???hired??? my son for food and a couple of beers and away
we went.It took all day but we got the whole
thing done. When we got to the clearcoat
we decided to spray until we ran out of materials. This would build it up thick enough for me to
buff out scratches for years to come. Here are pics of the process.
Prepped and ready to go
Really nice paint boothtaped and masked
My son spraying.

Base on
Clearcoat on
Back home and resting
Now…lots of sanding and buffing. I will buff the areas where the parts go together, assemble everything, and then finish buffing later.

November 19, 2012 at 7:04 pm #247430AnonymousInactivelooking really nice. Are you going to do the upholstery and tonneau cover yourself? Nice work you and the boys are doing.
November 28, 2012 at 8:12 am #247431George, the upholstery, convertible top, and tonneau are things I will definitely leave to the experts. I thought about tackling the seats but decided I wanted it done right, and quickly which immediately sealed my decision to outsource it.
I believe it those items will be the only ones I didn’t do myself. Being a control freak is tiring.
November 28, 2012 at 9:56 am #247432Great job Rocky. Great decision on the upholstery as well. I am thinking of outsourcing my seats and seat backs also. I’m currently toying with the idea of adding some red piping around the edges of the seat cushions and seat back. Keep up the excellent work.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackDecember 24, 2012 at 10:35 pm #247433Off to a great start for the holiday break.
The welting took longer than I expected but it came out pretty straight.
The first fender didn’t quite line up with all the holes but a little “stretching” and I got it.
The second one went on a little easier but I still have to finish the riveting.
Hopefully I’ll have more pics in the coming days.
December 25, 2012 at 11:46 am #247434very cool!
December 25, 2012 at 12:19 pm #247435love the colors….
December 26, 2012 at 9:26 pm #247436I got lots of little things done today but hard to capture in photos. However, I did get the grill assembled and ready for installation.
I wont’ go into the details but it took me all day of working on it to get it done. It was in very bad shape when I got the car and I wasn’t even sure I could resurrect it. But after a full day of multiple trials and errors and much under the breath cursing I finally got it ready to install.
It still looks rather weathered but let’s call it patina.
One of the mounting pins was broken and in my effort to repair it I broke another one. I had to walk away several times but finally got them soldered back in place and the grill slats locked in place.
One thing I couldn’t fix was the broken center bar on the grill cover. Which is why I’ve been asking about the size of the MG badges in another thread. I think my only option for now is to cover it up with one of the club badges. Which, according to a couple of guys here, should be plenty big to hide the “blemish”.
The grill goes on tomorrow and the rear fenders by the weekend. Onward!rockyx2012-12-26 21:43:14
