"Drive Happy"October 15, 2015 at 8:45 am #262903So just to be clear:
We will see you at Hornes Diner at the corner of 301 and 17 at aprox 12:30 tomorrow.Dean has been suffering from health problems but I hope he will be with us as well.Terry is trying to decide if he is bringing his MGB or regular ride. His wife is concerned about the length of the trip in a little car but I assured we can stop whenever we need. No pressure to get there tomorrow.Glads to hear another wife will be present – I will let her know.PM me if you don’t have my phone number. I believe I still have both of yours unless you changed the number. The weather looks to be good so far but a cold front coming in but looks like VA Beach is going to be warmer and by the time we head back this way on Sunday not real bad.October 15, 2015 at 9:59 am #262904Can anyone clue me in on the parking situation at the hotel? Thanks!

October 15, 2015 at 10:06 am #262905Somewhat limited right in front on the hotel’s grounds. Plenty of covered parking across the street. Free. The hotel will give you a parking pass. …But, we’ve never been there when the hotel was sold out, so who knows??
October 15, 2015 at 10:45 am #262906Thanks, Roy. I was looking at google maps and I wasn’t sure if that lot across the street was available. I’ll need a little bit of space to unhook.

October 15, 2015 at 12:58 pm #262907It looks as if Dean ( Dbanta ) will need to bow out because of health issues. He is very bummed.
A ” Rock Star ” parking space is now available and paid for if anyone does not have or someone wants to come to the show late notice.Terry will be driving his daily driver but he and his wife will be coming along to enjoy the weekend. Please PM me if anyone can come and use Dean’s spot.October 18, 2015 at 12:17 am #262908Just got back from the VA Beach Air and Auto Classic where I got a chance to see some of the guys again (Roy, Bill and Ed) and meet some others (Jack, Dale, Terry and his wife Greta). October 20, 2015 at 9:51 am #262916Thanks Ed.. .nice piece for those who didn’t make it ..
October 20, 2015 at 10:32 am #262917Thanks for the story and pics!
I’m definitely going next year!
I lived in VABeach while going to Naval electronics school at Dam Neck, back in the late 70’s.
LONG before the aviation museum was there. Wish it was, I would have been there daily!
I actually was allowed to FLY a guys Stearman biplane at an airshow. I was the last ride for the day, told him I was a pilot. He was in the back seat, and coached the takeoff and landing, but it was my flight. We stayed up LOTS longer than his other rides.
BEST $40 I’ve EVER spent!
I think about the open cockpit pilots whenever I’m driving my TDR!

October 20, 2015 at 10:44 am #262918A bit off subject here. But while the six of us were at the show, sitting around BS-ing, we discovered that three of us had been stationed at Dam Neck while in the military earlier in life. Jack and Vicenc had gone to school there. I had gone to school and later taught and was the OIC at the Submarine Navigation school where all prospective navigators and prospective commanding officers were required to attend. Dam Neck was/is a tiny station. Quite a coincidence – almost like Dam Neck was a TDr training center.
October 20, 2015 at 10:50 am #262919Before we close out this thread, it should be noted that the Oceanfront Inn was FULL. No vacancies.
The lesson here is to get your reservations early since they have a generous cancellation policy.
Also, the traffic in VaBch is pretty bad from 4 to 6 on Fridays, so it is best to leave a bit early and arrive before 4.
October 20, 2015 at 11:10 am #262920To be fair Ed is a pretty laid back guy but traffic will get the best of you if you let it – ask me how I know – drive in the DC I95 traffic every day.
Bottom line – I had a blast and although I love cruising by myself just fine it is a lot more fun in a group of like minded TDr car nuts. How about a Spring get together at Skyline Dr in VA? Jut throwing it out thereOctober 20, 2015 at 12:56 pm #262921Great story, Ed! I’m in for a Spring get together at Skyline and maybe a drive down to New Bern as well. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

October 20, 2015 at 7:24 pm #262922I was stationed across the river at Langley AFB in the mid-80s. Close but no cigar! Maybe I can get mine on the road for next year, since I now have a garage where I can work on it this winter…
