Greg, you say you were installing carpet so I’m thinking you put a hole in your tank with a trim screw?If so, just put a dab of Permatex gasket maker on a trim screw and screw it in the hole. Not too tight, please–leave a little room for the gasket material & let it cure overnight. Then never think about it again.

First coat after sitting all night before sanding. It leveled pretty well.Wet sanded everything this evening. After a few more coats, this just might work. I had reservations.

Well, if there is a rust issue, we sell this to fleets for their saddle tanks all the time.

Rollie, its a blast. You can safely do things here you can’t (shouldn’t) do on the street. Ed explained it pretty well. It’s a safe place to see how far your car can be pushed. Rollie: AutoX is short for auto-cross. It’s a race against the clock through a curvy course–in this case a very small oval on site of the show. Anyone can try. Roy, if you can’t get it absolutely clean, just get it as clean as possible and shoot it with vinyl/fabric dye from a rattle can. White’s easy to find, I think. I’ve used various tans and black and it works wonders.

First coat is on. Like any paint job, the first coat looks like crap. The redeeming factor is that it shines.

Someone on this board did it a while back. As I recall it came out awesome.Bill, that pic of you rolling with no doors or fenders is a calendar shot. Looks like you’re on a mutant lawn tractor, which is totally cool.

So you guys can mix and match and swap the motors until you find the ideal combo for each one. Cool!

Last year we had 3 runs of 3 laps. The time between runs was several minutes (5-!0)? This depends on how many are in the run group. Plenty of time to some fine tuning. I believe you could swap the engine if you could come close to the record time. I read somewhere a swap on a Beetle could be completed in about 5 minutes?
