I emailed Alan. Will advise.BTW, that 283 is going to scream just the way it is, and the automatic will probably be just the ticket–both for foot room and shifting ease. Old Buzz is right: leave it alone for the foreseeable. And hang on.I like building them in my mind….

So THAT’s what that is!No, that’s not the part that came loose–mine’s a choke–up higher and it’s bigger–like the one you have above your arrow. But I ALSO have one of those little barrel-shaped doohickies wired to the plus side of the distrib & was wondering what the heck it was. Mine’s on the opposite side of the carb but looks the same…[Read more]

Where’s the car going, to and from? Speedster guy Alan Merklin transports cars for a living on the east coast. He might know someone out your way.

If you want to go to a standard trans, there are two sizes of Chevy bell housings. The smaller one limits you to a 10.4-inch clutch disc, but it’s probably the one to use in a car as narrow as a TD and it should hold fine as long as you don’t go crazy and run steam roller slicks out back. The smaller bell housings also fit on the inline sixes, and…[Read more]

Paul,
To add a little diversity to the discussion – I took the small leaves out of my
front beam and then added coil overs to both the front and the rear.
My car rides great – then again I am a bit of a widebody ( working on that )
so others my differ. It tracks great and rides smooth and does not bounce
around.
I did have air shocks in the rear…[Read more] -

There is some kind of harmonic, 40 mph, on Bridget. Very minor steering wheel wobble and was the same before and after new tie rods, beam, springs, tires, balance, shox, etc. Sounds like yours is way worse and hope they run it down easy.Real knock-off wires? Man that’s phat.

I took mine to an alignment shop. You shouldn’t need to though if you have two flat pieces of something–yard sticks, say–’cause setting the toe-in is possible just with those, and that’s most of what you need.Get the sticks and a pencil, drive the car straight and slow to where you’re going to work, then crawl under and position the end of each…[Read more]

Are you running an adjustable beam yet? If not, it’s probably time to either buy a new beam with the adjusters in it already and pull most of the small leaves out when you reassemble, or buy the weld-in adjusters and have a competent shop install them for you, and do the same en re the springs. The adjustable beam gives you control of ride height.…[Read more]

That is a good point, Marc. I don’t know why it acted the way it did, but it bespeaks problems in the way she was wired. I’ll get a small in-line fuse for that lede, say 8-10 amps, for the next time that happens. And very right on the fire. It’s always a lucky thing these cars don’t burn up.

Turned out to be the lead to the electric choke. The wire fell off and then hid between the carb and the generator. I found it by feel–it was hot ’cause it was a ground short. Squeezed the terminal end a pinch and put it back, and away I went.

So the idiot lights come on when I turn the key now, but real dim. Nothing like when she’s working right.Nothing more–not even a click from the starter.

Thanks mrl.Yeah, I got flashers, headlight. Just no ign. Which is why, like you, I think a connection worked loose. Assuming it’s up around the coil/voltage regulator since that’s what i disturbed most recently, but I’ll work out from there. Lawn’s done, but I just might read some before I dive back into this.

I’m very interested to learn about the Z-car IRS setup. I have a little fantasy about putting a Quad-4 in one of these and thought that rear might match up nicely.Re the 283: apropos of nothing in particular, I would think about pulling those 461x/462 “camel hump” heads, & sell ’em to someone with a 327/350 or stroker (and some cash!) Replace with…[Read more]
