Have you tried the generator brush test?

Reading back through page 1 of this tread reminded me of my 69 Opel GT. That is a car I never should have sold.

The young gentleman at the tire store was afraid to move the car and asked me to. Must be young enough that he had never driven a Beetle.

We are lucky, lots of small wineries within a 10 mile drive. We could walk to Orfila (or back) if we had to.

When I did mine I went to my local O’Reilly’s and got this, basic cork.

It’s amazing how much better the car rides with four new matched tires. As other have mentioned, Discount Tire loaded them up to close to 30 psi. After lowing the front down to 18 the ride and cornering is great. Had to take it the local winery, Orfila, for a test drive.

I had to google Bug-A-Paluza, looks like it’s in Tennessee. I am in north county San Diego. Are there many kits that go? Looks like fun.

Our Duchess is insured with American Modern that we got through our Broker that handles our Mercury policies. We are in So Cal also. It’s one of those goofy collector car policies, but it was the only one I could find.

Finally got the Duchess her new tires, all 5 of them.  Turns out the front tires were 16 years old (205s) and the back tires were 20 years old (165s). Odd since the back tires were in much better shape. Went with 16580R15s all around. Here are a few pictures from the shoe store.

That picture of the two of you in the car together is awesome. The look on his face is just precious. The two of you will have a lot of happy memories with that car.

    Congrats on the progress.

P.S. Love the vintage amplifier in your garage, wish I still had mine. 😀

Thanks for all the information. I did find “4Jx15″ stamped on the rim. I guess that means it’s a 4” rim and the 205s are way to wide for them.

Have you tried removing the idle jet and blowing it out with compressed air? Easy to do without digging into the carb.

I sent him a message a while back looking for a replacement eagle ornament for the front fuel cap. Unfortunately he did not have one. Would be interesting to see what else he has.

Yesterday I did my first tune up on the Duchess.
Adjusted the valves, not hard all after reading the directions a few dozen times. They were all tight, I assume the shop adjusted them to .004, but could not verify as I do not have a .004 feeler gauge.
Found the oil leak, one valve cover gasket had not seated well and was pinched at the corner.

Adjusted the points – slightly tight
Replaced the plugs – did not look too bad but had no idea how old they are.

Still need to check timing and adjust carburetor. Idles much smoother with less engine wobble. Idles too fast, about 1150, starts to slow down and sounds like it might die, then recovers back to around 1150. Hope fully the timing and carb adjustments will solve this.

Did find the idle cutoff solenoid loose, tightened it up and the engine run-on went away.

All in all a good day under the car.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

I did buy a replacement fuel filter to put before the engine compartment. Based on the comments I will make it a priority to get it installed.

I went out last night and bought a copy of John Muir’s book. I am committed now.
