    Scubasteve,

I just tapped into the red and purple wires at the Chevette ignition switch and ran

them to a heavy duty momentary contact switch I mounted in the dash.

Well I found a local rebuilder in Layton, NJ named Hullco, but it took almost six months to completely rebuild by engine.  Removing the fuel pump and drive shaft from the opening to the distributor, when I changed to an electric fuel pump did ruin by main bearings as I was warned in an earlier forum topic.

I picked up the engine in early November last year and have reinstalled it this Winter.  What an adventure this was.  The repairs include a reground crankshaft, bearings, reground cylinder walls, new pistons, valve guides, reground valves and seats, ad infa-nausium (sic).  By the way the engine has regained its oil pressure.

FYI,  Please!  Nobody ever do what I did when I removed and capped off the mechanical fuel pump.

P.S. I reinstalled a new drive shaft and mechanical fuel pump, out of superstition.  No I’m still using the electric fuel pump,

Thanks for the Kudos, everyone.  By the way I have a document from NJMV that the required emissions should comply with the requirements for my 1981 Chevette engine and not requirements for 2015 vehicles.  I never realized that you VW buffalos had soo much refueling hijinks.

Thanks to all who responded to my request for information.  Thanks to LRH’s research of a Classic Motor Carriages name plate I am having a local trophy shop duplicate a plate replacing the Gazelle info with Classic MG (inside the octagonal shape).  NJ motor vehicle has agreed to doing this.  Once they verify the installation of the VIN plate they will proceed in the “re-VIN” process of making a replacement VIN for registration purposes.  I never could have done this on my own, folks.

Thanks, LRH this may be the solution to my issue.  Could you tell me the overall size of the plate?

Thanks, Paul yes I definitely processed through the Foreign Titles division of Trenton motor vehicles.  They scheduled my inspection at one of their three authorized inspection facilities. (Westfield, NJ) on June, 11 2015.

    Thanks Paul,

Since I had no access to the original Chevette VIN, NJ said they would have to “re-VIN” the vehicle.  When I contacted them how the process was going I was told that since the kit manufacturer had a VIN number on the Certificate of Origin document, we would now need to locate this kit mfg. VIN tag  on the car.  Since there isn’t any VIN tag on my chassis we need to have a duplicate kit VIN made, in the “style of the original one from Classic Motor Carriages”.

The supervisor at the NJ inspection facility said it MUST be the correct representation because he was going to research it himself to make sure that I COMPLIED WITH the right format to use.  Isn’t that nice?

    Please Help:

Has anyone on our site ever seen a kit car manufacturer VIN plate on any of your MGTD replicas?  I seem to recall we have about 160 vehicles represented throughout the country.

Thanks to everyone for your comments.  I just went to my local Advanced Auto and bought the smallest red reflectors that had DOT A embossed on them (1″ X3″) and placed them above the tail lights and outside the fender center seam.

Paul, good news for enthusiasts in NJ.  SAN just provided an urgent alert for NJ stating that a version of the SEMA model legislation has been reintroduced as A.B. 2626.  Now is the time to renew our support of this legislation with the committee members.

Is this O.K.? I installed a Moss luggage rack using a generous amount of extra steel fabrication, including bracing the underside of the top mounts with Unistrut material. The luggage rack opens to be 90 degrees to the surface of the spare.

Thanks so much, Roy for your assistance. With your help I was just able to post two pictures under the louvers post in the Ford/Chevy forum. Way Cool.

    (louvers)

During the fabrication of Beatrix I found a heat build-up under the hood before painting the car last summer. I insulated the hood and covered the underside with sheet stainless steel. Additionally I extended the air filter intake of the Chevette engine to the outside of the right side cowl. I used a heavy duty 7″ cutting blade to make openings in the louver depressions (finishing the openings for final paint was labor intensive though). I tested the effectiveness of the slots by taping strips of toilet paper to the full louver area. With the top properly closed the strips of paper rise horizontally with the engine idling and you can actually feel the air flow with your hand.

(inlet for air filter tube- before painting)

You touched on NJ requirements in this post. I’m a brand new kit owner from northern NJ. Can you mention some other NJ registration requirements, including required paperwork? Thanks, Joe Monesmith

    ray10 ?

    Ray10,

Rick is incredible? My MGTD has brakes of an 1981 to 1982 vintage (smaller calipers) than the 1985 replacements that I purchased. Rich is sending me the newer brackets that my 1985 calipers must mount to. The mystery has been solved. Rick also helped me with many other parts requirements yesterday. Thanks for this terrific resource.

    Thanks Dan,

I have a double barreled carb with engine # 14015685 plus A281 on the casting and E16224604 on the automatic trans. Unfortunately I have none of the original vehicle paperwork, being the fourth owner of this project (only the numbers on a hand-written transfer from Ian (liquidice). I will follow up using these numbers.
