John Simion replied to the topic Empi Disc Brakes fitted in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 1 month ago
This is sort of a followup, although it has to do with the drums rather than the Empi discs. I finally took my wife for a ride in Murphy, and her sharp ears detected that the horrible squealing was from the passenger’s side rear. I took the car into Mechanic #2, who spent quite a lot of time figuring out what was the problem. The drums were go…[Read more]

I’m very happy for you, Jack! Your car looks great. In fact, it looks a lot like my car before I messed with it (originally red with badges on the grill). In 20-20 hindsight, I probably should have reused that stuff but we have different “styles”. Now my car is British Racing Green metallic with no badges. You’ll see in a week or two when…[Read more]

I like simple suggestions I can understand and do myself, so I completely agree with the simpler suggestions above. I even have another one. This may sound stupid, but are you absolutely sure your spark plug wires are attached correctly? I mean, ABSOLUTELY sure??? Because the first idiot who worked on my car had #3 and #4 attached bac…[Read more]

I agree that it’s hard to come by a good VW mechanic. Lord knows I’ve had enough trouble and been ripped off badly. - I want to clarify what Toller said: “VINs on a TDR can be found near cover/inspection plate that covers the gear shaft coupler between the seats in front of the TDR shelf.” That might be true for some VW-based TDRs, but my car came with a “Utah-assigned VIN plate.” It’s a good thing it did, because I would have had to remove both the seat…

John Simion replied to the topic Rust in gas tank in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 1 month ago
I agree with Kall. Edsnova taught me how to do this. The hardest part is finding a capillary tube, and the scariest part was drilling a tiny hole for it into the gas tank neck. Once that was done, it was just a matter of gluing the tube into the neck with the right kind of epoxy and routing the capillary tube. I looped mine up over a litt…[Read more]

Mine is also passenger side rear. When installing, try to level the tank as much as possible. The builder of my car put the tank so it angles downward toward the front. This means my gas gauge sometimes seems to “hang” and also reads full even when not really full.

John Simion replied to the topic Trailering TDR in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 1 month ago
I’ve trailered “Murphy” numerous times to the mechanic using a tow dolly and using a full auto trailer from U-Haul. Other than the extreme narrowness requiring extreme caution driving (or more often, pushing) it on and off the trailer, you just secure the TDR like any other vehicle. There are nylon straps that go over the front wheels and r…[Read more]

+1 to Allen, but I didn’t see that you replaced the alternator itself, only the regulator. If it worked with a regulator before, ergo the alternator itself is designed to work with the regulator. It was charging before with the old voltage regulator, the first thing I’d try would be to put the old regulator back in and see if it works. It’s po…[Read more]

FYI. I felt that extending the studs was not viable because I have no experience doing that, nor do I have a lift, or extra gaskets. I did everything from under the car while laying on the floor, and there are just some limits to what you can do like that. Instead I filed a little bit off the bottom of each cap nut so it was a shorter reach…[Read more]

The nuts catch the threads WITHOUT the washers. Given the thickness of the washers, the nuts can’t be more than a millimeter away from catching the threads WITH the washers. I have an extra set of nuts, so I’m going to try putting the old nuts in a vise and filing the open end down so that the threads inside the nut are closer to the end than t…[Read more]

Adventures in Oil Changing …
I am totally inexperienced at this mechanic thing but my luck with “professionals” has been so bad that I feel like I have to do things myself. I ended up selecting 10W40 Mobil 1 and bought a bottle of Rislone oil additive with ZDDP.
The aftermarket oil filter was put on by the first idiot mechanic, so I should h…[Read more]

I tried a search on the web site, and I must be dense because I either get 1700 entries for “oil” or zero entries for “oil change” or even words like “synthetic.” Not sure what I’m doing wrong, so please forgive me if this duplicates previous advice.
My oil was supposedly changed and fresh when my former incompetent mechanic-cheater installed an…[Read more]

I’ve never gotten a good vibe from either car shows or car clubs. I used to belong to the Porsche club in another city and found it extremely clique-ish.
