  • Agree 100% Schu. I paid $1600 for mine, but have invested more tha that in the new engine, alone, and it still isn’t on the road. But it was the best deal at a reasonable distance, at the time…Seems to be more cars, at better prices, than when I was shopping a couple years ago… KentT2015-02-03 09:15:48

  • Congrats! Again, at that price point, I think you’ve got a great project to finish!

Several issues/questions here.First, you can retain cockpit heat if you can fab up an adapter that will fit underneath your seat bases yet still has roughly the same cross-sectio (area of the opening). For example, it could be a rectangle 1″ high and 8″ wide, or 2″ high by 4″ wide.To disconnect heat, the easiest/simplest thing to do is to simply…[Read more]

I hope to make that one. Won’t be ready for Carlisle…

  • Thanks, Paul.  Hadn’t seen those before — they were before my time here…

  • Look forward to the pics, George. I contemplated using a set of Opel GT gauges, but the smaller ones were two-in-one, and that combination wasn’t what I wanted. I was looking for 270 degree sweep, which I’ve found easier to read with a quick glance.KentT2015-01-26 16:29:49

Combine that with the fact that most VW chrome engine stuff is Empi cheap Chinese tin that doesn’t fit well, and only has one layer of chrome so it pitsa and rusts quickly…

Floor pan issues are common on VWs. Replacement/repair panels are widely available. Quality of work done is key…

Personally, I got in at a low investment point, but am already at the point that I’d do well to get my money out of it, having rebuilt a new engine for it… But, it has been a fun “pay as you go” adventure. Lots of good helpful people here to bounce ideas off, and to cheer you on…

Given that, I’d certainly go toward the 2-for-1 deal, then clean the VW up and sell it. You’d then have the TDr at a price point where you can either enjoy owning it, or, at worst get your money back out of it. The one priced at $7500 would have to a “local show winner” quality to command close to that price…KentT2015-01-19 11:09:39

IMO, TDrs are not good candidates for the “buy it and fix it up, then sell it” type of transactions. To be frank, their resale value sucks, compared to the time and money invested. Stock VWs, which continue to appreciate in value (some years/models more than others) are much better suited for buying/fixing/selling, though still more a labor of…[Read more]

  • KentT replied to the topic Propane TDr? in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years ago

I was talking about the propane tank for operating stove, heat, etc. Not for fueling the engine. Only propane-fueled equipment I’ve used is an industrial forklift that used it to reduce exhaust emissions indoors. No significant loss in power, but not convinced that it’s as cost effective…

Roy,My last tour in Australia (’96-’99) I drove a dual-fuel vehicle that could switch between “gas” (i. e. propane) and petrol.  I used propane whenever possible because it was more economical, but that was because the infrastructure was there to make it viable as a motor fuel.  Most of the petrol stations had a propane pump, a…

I think you need to do at least some rewiring to change from an ammeter to a voltmeter.I always understood that ammeters were wired directly into the primary charging circuit between the battery and the voltage regulator, and have no ground wire. Both legs are hot, and the wire must be a heavy enough gauge to carry the entire charge current of the…[Read more]
