Well, I’m committed to the POR15 patch route – my kit arrived today.Meanwhile, since Roy coined the TDr acronymn, I’d like to propose another…Sloppy (or Silly, or Stupid) Original Builder — SOBI muttered that a few times, during hours spent on my knees using an angle grinder with either a cutoff wheel or wire brush cleaning up after the guy.…[Read more]

BTW, Walmart now carries POR 15, so you don’t have to oder it from Eastwood or some other high end site and pay MSRP prices. I’ve used it in the past, but never this specific kit. Expensive stuff, but it lasts, if applied correctly. It’s not like…[Read more]

The POR15 Trunk and Pan repair kit comes with long-strand fiberglass cloth that they call Powemesh Reinforcing Mesh. They have you imbed it in the POR15 itself, rather than common fiberglass resin. The POR15 chemically bonds with the rusty metal, supposedly forming a stronger bond that will not crack as easily if it flexes. Should it (or…[Read more]

Note that a common problem with LED turn signals is that they do not provide enough resistance for the flasher (aka blinker) to operate correctly, turning them off and on. This may or may not be a factor in your symptoms. This is often addressed by:1. Using regular bulbs, not LEDs, in the front turn signals, or…2. Using an aftermarket universal…[Read more]

These “electric rats” will build their nests anywhere…
This part of the project started because (1) I needed to remove the external voltage regulator since the new engine has an alternator with built-in regulator, and (2) I needed to modify the original builder’s heat ducting into the center tunnel because it interfered with the seat. I wanted to…[Read more] -

If it is truly a stock muffler, you could replace the “flared trumpet” tailpipes with stock-style tailpipes and make it significantly quieter. Stock tailpipes have a layer of sound baffling all the way around the interior of the tailpipe, which makes a quite noticeable difference.

🙂 Having lived all over the US in a variety of housing, from urban townhomes, suburban subdivisions with HOAs and privacy fences, to New England villages, I retired back to my roots in hilly/mountainous East Tennessee. Comfortable, though not fancy, house on a hilltop in the middle of 12+ unrestricted acres with my closest neighbors hundreds of…[Read more]

I can relate. Mine sat with a car cover and tarps over it for almost a year, waiting on my garage build.

Been too cold to spend much time in the garage, without running the smelly kerosene heater. As long as daytime temps are in the 40s, it can be comfortable since it’s insulated to R-16, but those temps won’t return until mid-week. So, I have continued a bit of decorating, in short bursts. First a cheap 3×5′ MG flag from eBay.
Add an original,…[Read more] -

These are the LED tubes I used. Comparable ones at HD are $16 and change, as I recall. Since mine were T12s (no shunts), I was able to use the original tombstones. These have all power one one end only, and polarity isn’t important. Half the leads go to hot, half to neutral. I simply snipped the wires aff the ballasts and off the end not used, and…[Read more]

All VWs. There was even a TDr displayed last spring. Didn’t go last fall. If anyone is coming definitely let me know, so we can get together. I’m minutes away!

It’s on my radar since it’s only a couple hours away. Since I don’t really need anything from the swap meet, and my TDr likely won’t be ready (not that it is show-worthy anyway), it’s not a must for me…I’ll soon need to take an inventory and start getting rid of old or not needed parts, such as the 1500 SP that I just yanked out. But, Circle Yer…[Read more]

While on the subject of belts, these are the type of mounting reinforcements recommended, instead of the commonly provided big fender washers, if you are bolting belts to sheet metal, like the bottom of a VW floorplan. These spread the force over a large enough area that they won’t pull through the sheet metal. If you are bolting into the thicker…[Read more]

Allen,Without something that holds the shoulder belt up higher than the level of your shoulder when seated, I would not recommend it. You risk breaking a collar bone or that shoulder belt pushing you down and out under the lap belt (aka submarining) in a hard collision. Additionally, you need something that keeps that shoulder belt correctly…[Read more]

Paul offers some great advice on troubleshooting a sticky accelerator. My bet is on the cable binding somewhere – at the fan shroud, in the cable housing itself, or at the accelerator pedal. I’d only add one thing to my and Paul’s previous input. Operate the throttle manually at the carb, from the rear. Use your fingers to move the linkage lever…[Read more]
