Merry Christmas, every one! Hope Santa is better to you than you deserve, whatever that may be! 😀 He certainly was to me! Picked up a Hobart Handler 140 welder Monday, on sale at Tractor Supply… Then ordered a pair of PRP Roadster seats for the TDr. I’m blessed!

Alternatively, if you have 4-lug VW wheels, you can get the flat style hub caps with the Empi emblem and put larger MG stick-on decals over them.

Haven’t tried it, but I think supporting the inside edge of two individual seat baçks would be a challenge. What are you thinking of, that would allow each side to be indivually adjusted?

The factory jack sockets are those things sticking out from the side near your noted #2 and #3 on the drawing. I would not recommend using those sockets, but those are good lift points if you put a short piece of lumber along the edge of metal floor pan there. You can lift the whole side of the car from there. Sorry if I wasn’t…[Read more]

KentT replied to the topic Door Alignment – Chassis Flex (?) in the forum General Discussion 10 years, 2 months ago
If you floorplan is solid, I don’t think you need to be overly concerned with permanently warping or bending it by jacking it.Note however that the original jack point on VWs was on each side of the pan, underneath the rear window, in front of the rear torsion bar. Using that jackpoint would lift both front and rear wheels off the ground at the…[Read more]

Yep, Roy. I just didn’t want to write a book, though it looks like I wrote a chapter any way, once I posted it…
In warm climates, that 20W40 should work well, or even a 15w40 if you can find those weights. 10w30 and 10w40 are common. I would not recommend 5wXX unless you’re driving in Canadian winters, nor do I like the common 15w50 or 20w50…[Read more] -

Which is better, Ford or Chevy? I’ve owned over 30 air-cooled VWs over the years, worked in a couple VW shops part time, and in general agree with Roy’s points. In the years before synthetics, most street VWs were recommended to use Castrol 30w and avoid multiblends due to heat tolerance (air-cooled engines run much hotter than water-cooled).…[Read more]

KentT replied to the topic Clutch cable replacement in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years, 2 months ago
Does your TDr have the Bowden tube on the transmission that the clutch cable comes through? If it is missing or is improperly seated in the mounting bracket, it can produce symptoms like you describe. Similarly, the clutch cable must run through a tube inside the tunnel. If that tube is missing, or if it has broken loose, allowing it to move, you…[Read more]

The torsion bar leaves are spring steel… Pretty tough stuff. Would likely require a good drill press and appropropriate bit.Shorter tie rods are required because the spindles that they connect to are closer together than stock…

If you can find a good boat top shop locally, they can sew in a new rear window. I’d suggest you have them add a zipper, like most old American convertibles had. Being able to unzip the rear window to allow air to escape allows you to drive the car with the top up, no side curtains, without the top bellowing as badly. It also allows you to unzip…[Read more]
