Must have been about 5 months since I changed the MC and bled the brakes. The nut is actually the connector that threads into the brake cylinder from the brake hose. I refilled the reservoir every 5-6 weeks. It never went down all the way just down about 1/4 inch below the full line. The nut was cracked at the portion where the threads start just below the hex part of the nut. I must have overtightened it at one point. Brake cylinder threads were ok and the new tube from brake hose to brake cylinder threaded right in and all is good now. I’ll be keeping an eye on it weekly for a bit to make sure it doesn’t return.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackFebruary 2, 2020 at 10:54 am #306486Been having wiring problems on and off and decided to ditch Moneypenny’s hand made (by me) harness and got her a new Harness from Rebel Wiring. Waiting for the weather to straighten out and get to her. She’s getting new tires and a good detailing after that!

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackOctober 6, 2018 at 9:46 am #305581In Georgia they won’t title any vehicle as old as mine. MY TDr is on a 71 VW chassis so they won’t even consider it. Registration was pretty simple with bill of sale. Moneypenny is registered as a 1971VW-Other. Still wish I had a title for it though because without it Moneypenny is destined to live forever in Georgia. Unless the laws change. Wish you the best of luck in obtaining a title.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackSeptember 24, 2018 at 9:29 am #305539Tried the MG Magic visors with and without my aviator sun glasses yesterday and in the early evening. Visors and sunglasses worked about the same except the aviator sunglasses give me more definition. So going to stick with sunglasses. Can’t say about fog because it very seldom gets foggy out in my area of Georgia.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackSeptember 22, 2018 at 10:59 am #305537Greggs. Are you saying wear the yellow tinted lenses and look through the MG Magic sun visors? Wondering what that would look like? I normally wear my prescription aviation sun glasses, even in the fog, and it helps quite a bit. Haven’t mounted the MG Magic sun visors yet. Perhaps today. Mine are the dark green. I’ll have to mount them and give them a try with and without my aviator sun glasses and report back.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackSeptember 21, 2018 at 10:16 am #305534Bill. I got the sun visors from MG Magic. Was thinking of using their brackets and using the tv advertised visors on those. Still on the fence about them though. Thanks for your input.

Glad you folks weathered that storm with little damage. Prayers were answered for you. And down in Oak Island, SC, John Barry faired okay as well. Glad our TDers are all safe and unharmed.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 29, 2018 at 10:57 am #305476Noel. You are correct tires for sure and possibly the jel coat depending on how it sat all that time; like stored under cover, out of elements in carport/garage etc. I would definitely check the brakes. Probably change the fluid and any rubber brake hoses. The metal portions of the brake lines should be okay…just need a good cleaning out when you bleed the brakes. I’d also clean and drain the fuel tank.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJuly 16, 2018 at 8:45 pm #305207Ed. For vintage color VW wiring diagrams, go to http://www.thesamba.com and click on the technical tab and then wiring diagrams. They cover type 1, 2, 3, 4, Ghia, Thing and K70 whatever that was. Hope this helps ya.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJuly 15, 2018 at 10:39 am #305199Ed. Nice work on the Spyder. Listen…if you get tired of cars, we have a B-17 at the Warner Robins Museum of Aviation that we’re restoring that could use your sheetmetal work! No prior aircraft or military service required.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJune 17, 2018 at 11:50 am #305079mglondonroadste. If your brake master IS mounted to the VW frame head (Napolean’s Hat) you need to disconnect the MC bolts from the inside but DO NOT pull them out all the way. The frame head piece is double-walled with a spacer sleeve over the bolts between the walls (to prevent buckling should the bolts be over torqued.) If you pull the MC mounting bolts completely out those spacer sleeves won’t come with the bolts and will drop to the bottom of the pan. And getting them back up into position will be nearly impossible and you may end up with an annoying rattle up front. Best to disconnect the brake lines from the MC, (don’t forget the brake light wires), then thread the bolts out until the MC just comes loose and leave the bolts in the frame head. This is also a good time to check the hose(s) from the MC to the brake reservoir and change them if needed.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJune 10, 2018 at 4:08 pm #305057I used the wiring diagram from a 71 Beetle as my TDR is on a 71 beetle chassis. These are the connections for my lights.
Light Switch
Terminal 1: one RED wire – Power in
Terminal 2: one YELLOW wire – to instrument lights; one WHITE wire to Fuse 2 on fuse panel (input side)
Terminal 3: Unused
Terminal 4: One YELLOW wire – to Hi Beam Relay (terminal 56)Hi-beam Relay
Terminal 56: YELLOW wire from headlight switch (terminal 4)
Terminal 56a: YELLOW wire to Fuse 4 on fuse panel (input side)
Terminal 56b: WHITE wire to fuse 6 on fuse panel (input side)
Terminal s: BROWN wire to terminal s in steering column (this is the low/high beam switch in the column)But again…I made my wiring using the 71 beetle diagram. Hopefully it helps you out.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJune 10, 2018 at 11:21 am #305054Before you take it to Midwest, check the headlight (high beam) relay. I believe the headlight power goes through the hi beam relay either before the headlights or before the switch. If that is not working or properly connected, neither headlight will work.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJune 3, 2018 at 6:52 pm #305031Ricrx7. I also have two sockets on mine. Look in the sockets. The socket with two contacts is the tail/brake light combo. The single contact (mine is on top) is the turn signal.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackMay 23, 2018 at 7:19 am #305010Thanks guys. Moneypenny gets a break today as its 90% chance of thunderstorms. Its raining right now. But she’s covered nicely and I’ll get back to her tomorrow after my shift at the Robins AFB Museum of Aviation. I volunteer there Tuesdays and Thursdays. Info desk in the AM and afternoons I scoot over to the next hangar and help restore the B-17 if needed. Its fun and it keeps me busy.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackMay 21, 2018 at 4:05 pm #304993Gotta change the oil and get her seats in and then take the top and tonneau cover to our local “Over the Top” convertible top specialists. I’m going to let them handle the convertible top install and fit the tonneau cover. Almost there!

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackMay 20, 2018 at 7:44 pm #304989Sir Ed…you may call me “Murphy!” Why? Well the shower curtain I purchased was not quite thick enough and sagged due to the heat. It worked perfectly keeping the water out UNTIL…I took it off and poured a third of the water (that had collected in the part that sagged) onto the floor pan. But I know the curtain works and this time I spent a little more on a new, thicker shower curtain. 🙂

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackDecember 17, 2017 at 5:15 pm #304479Check the carb and distributor types. If you have a mechanical distributor and a Solex 34PICT3 well they don’t work well together. A 34PICT3 likes a dual vacuum advance distributor. Just another thing to check. And if you haven’t done it yet, check the setting of the choke. They are adjustable.
