Looking Good!
What is that crazy contraption on the side of the case where the oil pressure sender goes? And no oil filter on mine either, they seem to be used mainly on high performance engines. -
Derek replied to the topic fuel hose between tank and tunnel in the forum VW Based Kits 9 years, 8 months ago
I think on my TDr everything is 5mm hose since it is carbureted, I used the equivalent fractional size though.
I believe 7mm was used on fuel injected VWs, at least for type 3s.Is your fuel pump mechanical or electric? The mechanical ones should be same size inlet and outlet. And I felt the same way as you when I first got mine, I was hesitant to… -

Well my FF TDr doesn’t have any fender braces and I haven’t ever had a problem with flexing.

Allen I was being a bit sarcastic, I don’t know if you saw the photo in the link where it looks like there are about 10 leading to or from the alternator. Almost like they are using more than one wire together to make up for too-small gauge.

How many wires do you need connected to an alternator?? 😮

I’m almost wondering if they are the same car? They look almost identical to me!

Derek replied to the topic where's the ign switch? in the forum General Discussion 9 years, 9 months ago
Yes that is correct, on the beetle the ignition switch is part of the steering column. You should still be able to trace it and wire it how you will.
That actually looks like a Type 3 wiring diagram to me.Here is a link for a 69-71 beetle diagram. -

Wow that looks nice! I’m hoping to do something similar when I rewire the mess behind the dash.
As far as the 2-1 connectors I had picked up a box at Napa Auto and it had a mix of the piggyback and side by side. -
Derek replied to the topic Hardtop in the forum MGTD Kit Parts and other stuff 9 years, 10 months ago
I have not been using my hard top at all lately since the canvas is perfectly enjoyable in nice weather and I have a properly enclosed car to drive otherwise. It would take a little work and maybe some new vinyl or paint to get it looking tip top again, but I would be willing to part with it. It’s fairly heavy and large so I’m not sure how…[Read more]

Looks like a good start! For wiring I would jump over to thesamba.com and download one of the later (maybe 70 or so) wiring diagrams to help run everything as it should be a very similar layout. I even bought a used never installed wiring loom for VW and modified it to fit. It works well but I need to clean up under the dash at some…[Read more]

So now when we post photos in a topic or reply do they automatically go to the gallery too? -
Derek replied to the topic Keeping the Cats Out in the forum General Discussion 9 years, 11 months ago
I know that problem, had mine out for just one night and the next morning the passenger compartment smelled of cat pee… Took weeks to get it all the way out.
As far as keeping them away I don’t have any nifty tips but some of the above sound like they’d work well. -

Ha! That is quite entertaining and would be fun to see! Thanks for the history lesson Paul, I love hearing about odd little tidbits such as that.
In other news, the new “daily driver” got me to work comfortably and warm despite the cold (still above freezing though) and fog. Runs stupendously, plan on doing a general VW tune up soon and going… -

WOW! Those wire wheels do look quite smart!
Got the brake lights working today. Just had to replace the switches at the master cylinder. While at it I also put new pads in the front and took apart and cleaned the calipers. -

Derek replied to the topic VDO Gauges in the forum Other Auto Parts Venders 9 years, 11 months ago
Ok great to hear about the dolphin gauges, I sent them an email about a “custom” set with the 5″ speedo and tach and a voltmeter, clock, and fuel. He said it would be about $400.

Derek replied to the topic VDO Gauges in the forum Other Auto Parts Venders 9 years, 11 months ago
I’ve been looking over my options doing some research and the Dolphin gauges look pretty nice. Spike do you have one of their speedometers and does it read accurately with the VW cable and tire size?

Derek replied to the topic VDO Gauges in the forum Other Auto Parts Venders 9 years, 11 months ago
Thanks for the tips guys!
Ed- do the beetle speedo and classic instruments tach match fairly well? I would like to have the two “clusters” match among themselves as closely as possible but that could just be me being a perfectionist! -
Derek replied to the topic VDO Gauges in the forum Other Auto Parts Venders 9 years, 11 months ago
Along the lines of this topic does anyone know of where to get a speedometer and tach for VW? (Tach is easy but a matching speedo with the VW cable connection is not) VDO doesn’t make a gauge with the analog cable input, all theirs are digital now and to convert from cable to digital needs a few expensive bits…
