  • Paul, is it the site’s software or the server we use that lets the SPAM get through? If we got an new server provider would we be able to avoid this PITA???

  • Thanks for posting those pics to illustrate what I tried to explain.
IMHO, wheel adapters are just as bad…great to get those “cool” wheels mounted on a “trailer queen” show car, but not the ticket for a driver that I am riding in.
Tim Smith has decades of experience and is a true expert. He was worth every penny I spent on his work.
    I had two…[Read more]

  • Stay away from re-drilled rotors and drums. The VW 4 bolt disc and drum has a “cross” pattern cast into the drum/rotor on the back side that makes the drum/rotor more than twice as thick where the log bolt holes are drilled and threaded.
If you buy redrilled drums/rotors, the threads are MUCH TOO THIN to safely secure the wheel because the lug…[Read more]

  • IMHO Grizzly Grip tastes better than the Dupli-color

  • Maybe the shock bodies have a part number or manufacturer’s name stamped on them?
If you know the shock dimensions and  an get the car “scaled” at a race shop, there are many “coil over” shock manufacturers and a “zillion” spring rates to choose from to “dial in” your car’s ride and handling. Most of these are adjustable for ride height or “…[Read more]

  • OK…is NC is surely the undisputed “Land of TD Replicas”. Sir Walter Raleigh would be proud
Welcome JH Byrd…as Larry stated, we here are a wealth of unmarketable knowledge!

  • If the VW based TD guys frequent http://www.thesamba.com these pedal mod guys advertise there all the time.
Wider pedal set-ups, heim joint clutch cables, etc. If you are not frequenting the site just to check out the ads and classifieds, you missing a lot of neat VW related…[Read more]

  • An 8″ Ford came in all V6 powered Pinto variants (Mustang II, Bobcat) and all the Pinto and Bobcat station wagons had them too.
I like them because the 3rd member is a “pumpkin” style that can be built on a bench or swapped out easily. I actually have two complete 8″ Pumpkins, one a 3.80 and one a 3.55 for my 40 Ford.
These are narrow, but t…[Read more]

  • Thanks Ringo. I actually have a contract in “attorney review” on my house. In the last week I have hosted all the various inspections by the buyer’s mortgage company, FHA, Termite guy, etc. Seems another shows up every day!
The buyers, a young newlywed couple are perfect for the neighborhood…a cul-de-sac with lot’s of young couples and little…[Read more]

  • In all probability, COSTCO will NOT carry a 165/80R15 tire.
These tires are limited production by the manufacturers that make them. Nankang is the brand that most VW people use and they are available mail order.
Sometimes Kumho will have them and Tire Rack.com has limited supplies of them.
Go on http://www.thesamba.com classifed and search for ‘tires’…[Read more]

  • IMHO, the best fuel tanks to use if you are going to change over is a racing style Fuel Cell.
These come in many shapes and sizes with all “streetable” options like fuel level senders. etc.
These are MUCH safer driving around in a fiberglass replica that go up like a Roman candle if a fire occurs. I’ve said this before…these cars are really…[Read more]

  • One is ‘members only’ and the other is for “bling” on the website. Paul can put stuff there…we can’t.

  • The pedals in these cars are moved back quite a bit over the factory Beetle location. Looks like the builder of yours was comfortable with then where he put them.
You can remove the carpet from the tunnel on the passenger side opposite the pedals and see if the builder cut an access hole for the two bolts and nuts that should now hold the VW…[Read more]

  • Hi…unfortunately, even the most pristine of these cars need “tinkering”. For the most part, they are home built kits and you are at the mercy of whomever built the car, how accomplished they were as a builder and how much $$ they spent on new or almost new parts.
These are not like buying a factory built car like a Miata, Honda S-2000, etc.…[Read more]

  • I found out the hard way that taps will “weaken” threads in some instances, especially soft metals. Also they snap VERY easily.
I bought a set of barley used (some weren’t) Snap-On re-thread (male) and thread chasers (female) at the Englishtown Raceway Park Spring Swap Meet a few years ago. The local circle track machinist/engine builder told me…[Read more]

  • Sad, but glad is the feeling. Weird when life is that way.
I am glad your eBay transaction went fine. I’ve always had good one’s when I was the seller…no luck as a buyer when it’s a vehicle.
I am “TD-less” right now since Larry Murphy did my old BCW proud. There’ll be another when the dust settles after my retirement and house sale. Only 76…[Read more]

On a 5.5″ wide rim, like the chrome, slotted, OEM look Mangels on rear of my Beetle, a P185/65R15 works great. Same diameter as a P165/80R15 stock Beetle tire too.
The key  for the extra width is the slightly wider, 5.5″ rim. Using P165/80R15 is about the max for a 4.5″ wide rim.
The 60 series I agree would look stupid on a TD.
    Tirerack had 41…[Read more]
