Al….that’s awesome. Wish I had the time to do that. I’m coming home Saturday March 21. Way to little time in Oz. But I needed to save vacation days for other stuff this year.

Good looking Duchess.Converting to a fold down windshield would not be as easy as you might think. This car has the false covers over the windshield frame. But under them, the frame sides come straight down. And the cowl has a lip that comes straight out, then down at about a 90 degree angle. At least one member here has done it…but the…[Read more]

That is beautiful. But if it’s a TC, it has been heavily customized. You already noted the rear end. And I agree with Roy, that it’s not a stock TC windshield frame

Thanks Roy. I don’t know if it’s well done either. 😉
But I have a VW powered TDr with a generator and a VW powered Intermeccanica Roadster with an alternator. I figure I need to understand them both! -

And finally (for real this time), from Rob and Dave again: http://www.vw-resource.com/output.html Basically:
Alternators are activated by current (i.e.: flow), so they need the reistance of the idiot light.Generators are activited by changes in voltage, so the voltage regulator takes case of this and the idiot light does not.I think.

One more “last” comment. 😉
Found this on the Samba: “…a generator with regulator does not need the initial pulse of 12 volts to start producing electricity as a alternator….” http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=463479So…with an alternator, the idiot provides the current to excite the alternator and be… -

I keep learning stuff every day!
Did some digging around. We’re not the only ones to talk about this. I found search results in at least a half dozen car related forums. The resistance provided by the idiot light does initiate the charging sequence for alternators, in “modern electrical systems.” This is the closest to a layman’s de… -

Rick, you didn’t really “get rid” of a voltage regulator. Alternators typically have the voltage regulator built into the alternator housing.
Nobody commented on the “is the idiot light actibg as a switch or is it just a status light” issue. I feel so ignored.
