I love this site!!!! Always filled with logical, practical, fun-filled facts, factoids, and…stuff!!
But now I’ll have to drain and refill my electric pole saw to purge it of that offensive inferior motor(a.k.a. chain) oil– Happy Jack(even happier knowing that my VR1 API SN “racing oil” is not banned in North Carolina — ):D -

Apparently my cache of oil is older than yours – I ain’t got no SN. However, you should know that the electric “saw on a stick” that I recently borrowed from you, has the blade lubricated with Valvoline Racing CD oil that was specially formulated to meet all the requirements of single cylinder diesel engines (including turbocharged) in 1955.

Hey Roy,
Interesting reading — in digging through the 4 pages of “stuff” it appears that post # 12 hit it on the head — “Valvoline VR1 is still available and legal in California. Valvoline makes 4 “flavors” of VR1. The three obsolete ones are not available. The most popular and most used one…API SN/SM/SL is not obsolete and still a… -

Progress on the Toyota, for any interested. I think this will be a much better fix than the typical DIY guy might make (with fiberglass mesh and Bondo). It’s all metal, held together with two full packages of JB Weld at 3960 PSI along a good bit of surface area.
I actually had fun shaping the remnants of my wrecked Nissan’s front fender to… -

That’s a good spot to look. They are apparently very common in Brazil. None on the Samba when I looked the other day but probably they come up from time to time. They should not cost a lot.

Yes. 4×130.

Brazilian VW rims, late model (circa 1991–see here). Cip1 had these–non chrome–on “clearance” for like 4 years for $49 per and I almost bought them a dozen times, but never did. Haven not seen them listed in quite a while, so maybe discontinued.
I think they look very cool & would go great on a TDr.edsnova2016-03-20 21:12:09

Thanks Kent for the Bosch part number. Kind of pricy new (but I know, I know, SAFETY….) however, I found them listed for sale on The Samba ads for $30 plus shipping. Before I pull the trigger and order 2 [one for Emma (BCW Tdr) and one for Merlin (bugeye)] I’m going to check with my local VW recycler/scrap yard/mechanic to see what he has in h…[Read more]

I remember it well. I thought it was in the 50’s or 60’s.
Used it many times and I think it was Gumout. I tried hard to find it (or it’s successor) a few years ago. Failed. As I remember, a ton of black smoke when you used it. For some reason, I think it was banned or discontinued or both.

I think if you don’t have the sleeve (this part?) then you have an early style rig. You’ll want an early style pressure plate or, if you get a later one, also get this collar that goes over the “fingers.”
Most of the VW replacement clutch kits come with the collar assembly. You just remove it if you’ve got the later style box. If you don’t, of… -

Allen, you are right to be careful here. I don’t know the answer to your question, but the clutch disc was changed about 1970. I had bought a 1969 clutch disc for my 1969 engine. Wrong. — I have a 1971 (or later) transmission.

Hey Kent,
Great post on the electric fuel pump relay issue. I have electric fuel pumps in both the Bugeye and the BCW Tdr — neither car has a cut out relay as you described. So, I need to rewire both cars to add this safety feature….Do you happen to have the part number for the Bosch fuel pump relay? or whatever model works with our ca… -

Click on the “Reference Library” immediately to the left. If the answer to your question can not be found there, we’re going to need a LOT more info about what you have and the car you are putting together.

Good info, guys. Never thought of this as I did the Soob Job. Now I’ll need to check and make sure the Subaru wiring incorporates this feature. I think it must, but I don’t know.
