I would love to see the police interrogation of the dude who breaks into a garage and steals a TD windscreen.

That is a sweet looking car. And it appears to be a true Schwepps car, which would mean it was built at the BCW factory in PA, not in some knucklehead’s garage like mine.
The one error he makes is claiming the car is “identical” to the original “in all dimensions.” Actually the BCW is 3 inches longer than the MG was. The tub is a little wider but… -

OK Dale.
Meantime, here’s the long-overdue blog post on the sorting process, so far. -

Mine has many, many bolts. The builder, Graham Horner, also did the right thing by squeezing about 25 tubes of silicone caulk between the body and pan before snugging the bolts.

Ed,
One step forward – two back. I would really like to hear your take on the whole subject a couple of months after you complete everything. I still have not decided what engine to use in my speedster project. I have a new 2007 VW type 1 sitting there ready to go in but have been thinking Subbie. Your experiences may make me just stay with my… -

I did not build my TDr. Aren’t all the TD kit bodies bolted to the frame? My Daytona Migi is.

VDO has an App.

VDO still makes instruments and tons of places carry VDO. Shouldn’t be hard to get an exact replacement (with just a little luck). I’m sure they have a website.

Fixing these things is a bit like clock repair. IF you are ready to scrap the old one and buy new, first carefully take it apart. The problem is most likely a gear with a tooth worn down so much that it no longer engages the other gear it is supposed to mesh with. Sometimes you can repair by building up the worn tooth (I’ve used epoxy or JB…[Read more]

Heads are back on the engine, as is the intake manifold.
Made a bracket to hold the heater controls.Still need to crawl under and see about the transmission. Might be seeping gear oil from the reverse light sender. Because the whole assembly is forward an inch and some, that thing is real hard to get to now…so I might have to unbolt it entirely as well. -
Royal replied to the topic speedometer in the forum General Discussion 10 years, 11 months ago
Prob the easiest is to disconnect the cable at the Speedo. If you can turn the cable with your fingers, it is either broken or has become disconnected at the driver’s side grease cup. If you can’t easily spin the cable within it’s sheath, then it is probably good and your problem is in the Speedo. Let’s hope your Speedo is ok.

Langan, why did you rule out the Jag? Most irs are not independant of the frame and require hinge and radius arm mounts that are critical. The jag rear is a unit that would just bolt under and includes everything including springs etc. You often see them under hot rods because they are easy to use, handle 400 hp and they also have inboard disc…[Read more]

I mis-remembered about the TR rear. Actually, it’s a ’50 TD with a 5 speed from an Austin Healey and MGA disc brakes.

Looks like you’re right, Roy.
The LaBrush TD has a Jag rear but I think that car is overkill in every dimension. -

Wow! Great find! And for it to go to someone who really knows what it takes to rebuild her–that’s good luck all around.
Please post a build thread here. We’re all keen to learn. -

I just love picture #2. It would make a great T-shirt for those of us trying to Save the world; One TD replica at a time. (Except, of course, it’s a TF)

Ed, if I remember correctly, the TR4A was the first with IRS in 1964. Not quite the same era as our TD’s – but close.
