Well, I’m glad my breakdown spurred a good round of posts about must-haves. Not being especially adept at mechanical diagnosis or repair, my primary tool is my Hagerty’s card. I’ve probably made good use of it at least once a year since acquiring the Lafer in 2007.My problem turned out to be electrical. I seem to have been driving on the battery…[Read more]

Greg wins in more ways than one. On my way back from that excruciating deep-cleaning at the dentist’s, I got within two miles of home and stalled. No spark at all. Rolled to within a few feet of a fried-chicken place and, with the help of a kindly stranger, got the Lafer off the street and safely into the parking lot. It being rush hour, of…[Read more]

It’s 81 degrees and sunny here in Houston.
Just took Percy out for a spin through some twisty bits in the pine forest east of here, mainly to see how the fuel pump is doing (felt like it might’ve gotten clogged yesterday after I filled the tank, but seems to be fine now). In a few minutes I’ll get it out again for a dreaded trip to the dentist…[Read more] -

Any decent upholstery/trim shop should be able to make one, once you’ve located or fabricated a frame. Don’t go with the low bid, though. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Looks like a Brooklands windscreen to me. Usually seen on competition cars:

No one has EVER accused us of being “proper” here, Ric. But thanks for the kind words and welcome to our world.

Oh, man, I am looking forward to it more than I can say. I’ve been a newspaperman for 44 years, and the job just isn’t what it used to be. My wife and I downsized seven years ago when the nest emptied out, mainly so we’d have a house and yard that won’t need as much maintenance as our old one. So far, so good. With any luck, I should have all the…[Read more]

Sunny and crisp here today, too, but I spent the day trying to get my retirement ducks in a row and swapping emails with Social Security. Soon, though . . .

Whoa! There’s no way you’d lose THAT in a crowded parking lot. I think if we looked in a dictionary for the definition of “yellow,” that’s the photo we’d see. Not a bad price at all, judging from down here in Texas.

Wow, Edward. The cars all look good (except maybe for the one missing a door), but what I’m REALLY impressed with is the garage. Is that at your house?

That sure looks like what started out as the TD2000 in New Zealand. I think the company was eventually bought and moved to Singapore, but I didn’t hear anything about them selling cars here in the U.S.On balance, way too expensive. I do like the 3rd brake light and the TD logo on the radiator shell and the wheel hubs, as well as the padding along…[Read more]

I’m of two minds on the chromed-up engine. On the one hand, it looks nice and obviously someone has spent a lot of money it. On the other hand, it’s money that could’ve been spent on something more practical, like brakes or gas or oil. Most of the time, the rear deck lid is closed, so who’s going to see it?

Try this http://www.bluemarlinmotorsusa.com/1952_MG_TD_Stuart_FL_251097635.vehWebsite says to email for a price. If you think the car has a lot of bling, wait ’til you get a load of the engine.

Even at $3,500 I’d say you were getting a decent deal if it’s running halfway decent. Good luck, and do keep us posted.

Only thing I can think of is a well-made — and snugly snapped — tonneau cover.

That might look good, Kent, but my “slats” aren’t real; they’re just molded into the mock grille. They were accented with chrome pinstripe tape when I got it, but it had so many gaps that I just pulled it and sprayed it all flat black.

I posted some when I joined the club, but I don’t think the gallery is back online yet. I’ll try to post a couple from another website. Have done quite a bit to it since finding it in a barn outside Montgomery, Texas, though: new top, interior, engine, exhaust, tires, brakes, mirrors. Finish and wheels are original.

Yes, I’m aware of that, but I’m not overly concerned with being “authentic” as the Lafer isn’t — strictly speaking — an MG-TD replica. Too many differences, large and small. It does share a style and a spirit with the TD, I think, but painting the slats to match the interior (which is very close to the color of the wheels and pin-striping) might…[Read more]
