    surfing ebay for wire wheels and vw adapters and found a site that didnt have a vw(4x130mm) pattern but would have a set of adapters made and sell for $240. seems reasonable to me since ive seen used wire wheels in the 2-300 range. below is sites reply to my question of vw adapters. hope this is useful to members

    The adaptors will add 3/4 inch to your track, more or less, each side. And what is the offset on the wires? Might add more width still.

    Instead of adaptors, you might consider having your hubs drilled to the desired bolt pattern. The Speedster guys have this done all the time & say it’s $100. I don’t know if that’s for one or for four, but suspect it’s for all four, since once the jig is set up it’s nothing to run more hubs through it.

    Be very careful with redrilled VW brake drums/rotors. The back side of the drums where the original 4×130 bolt holes are drilled is almost 4 times as thick as the rest of the drum face.

    There is a cross (+) that is cast right into the back side (shoe side)drum that these lug bolt holes are drilled and tapped into. The rest of the drum is WAY thinner. IMHO, too thin to support enough threads to safely attach a wheel.

    IHMO, wheel adapters suck too. But, as far as wheel adapters go, there are many vendors that sell them. If you decide to use them, get the 4×130 to 5×4.75″ (VW to Chevy) pattern. Aftermarket wheels for Chevy bolt pattern are WAY wasier to find.

    Re: wheel adapters,  there are basically two kinds.  One is a cast, almost like “pot metal”, with those, if you overtorque them the stud will spin in the metal and make it almost impossible to get your wheel off.  The other type is stamped metal about 1/4 inch thick.  It has studs pressed in.  Again, if you overtorque and spin one, you have a problem.  I’m told that the secret to using the latter, is to spot weld the back end of the stud to the adapter.  This is a trick that the offroad people told me about.  Hope that this helps.

    not really crazy about wheel adapters anyway. however i have seen wire wheels on vw powered cars so there got to be a way to do it safely. but if it means buying a 2000 dollar set of wires, i will stay with the stock wheels

    Real wires are expensive!!!

    $2,000 for a set of four is not unreasonable.

    Dayton used to make a 52 spoke wire wheel for the VW four bolt pattern. I believe 52 is the correct number for the OPTIONAL original TD wires.

    Some time ago, I was speaking with TrueSpoke about a run of wire wheels for the VW four bolt pattern. I had been quoted $1,700 to $1,800 for a set of four.

    i thought i had read the thread before but could not find it .i get the picture, they cost money that i could really use in more important areas(tires,brakes etc.)
    was hoping someone with wires could give me some pointers.
