I see a lot of people suggesting or recommending a book for the TDs on a VW chassis. Nothing wrong with the recommendations but just wanted to remind folks with VW based TDs that there are two books/manuals that they should have not just one. The first and most inportant one (in my opinion) is the Orange Bently manual which is a shop manual and covers the entire car from pulling an engine to pulling the body and includes wiring diagrams. The second is John Muir’s book “How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive” and that’s the one that’s a fun read and should be kept in a plastic bag and under the seat of your TD. Very helpfull when making emergency repairs. But for normal shop work I’d go with the Orange Bently Manual.

August 2, 2011 at 1:11 pm #245580And for older VW based kits, the Bentley “Blue Book” VW manual is a “sister” to the Bentley Red or Orange book.
I have an extra Red Book if anyone is interested. Unfortunately, I loaned my Blue Book to a fellow NJRC member and never got it back.
He is long gone out of NJ…last we heard he had bought an old church in West Virginia that he turned into a house.
August 2, 2011 at 2:32 pm #245581OK Mark…I get it. We need more detail.
Bentley Blue covers: Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia Official Service Manual Type 1: 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969
Bentley Orange covers: Volkswagen Super Beetle, Beetle & Karmann Ghia (Type 1) Official Service Manual: 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979
Mark, I can’t find a Bentley “Red”. What does that cover?
Bentley Publishers makes their manuals available as downloads, but theyare a bit pricey.

August 4, 2011 at 12:09 pm #245583I guess I qualify too. Paul, may remember that guy I loaned it to. Quite a character.
The red book is the orange book. The VW crowd in the club I joined call it the red book. Technically it is orange though.
