"Drive Happy"September 1, 2012 at 4:53 pm #251576This place is not only cool. It is exceptionally cool. The site is beautiful and loaded with antique vintage military airplanes that still run. This is a functioning special use airport with very capable machine shop capabilities. You will be impressed with the planes. They get them out and run them regularly. If any of you are interested in going, we could reserve a spot and park together. I’ve never been there in conjunction with a car show, but I’m in.
How bout it? Anyone else interested? My son, who is not prone to BS, knows the guy who built this place (it’s relatively new). Apparently, the guy was retired and had “too much money”. He always loved old military planes so he bought a piece of land and built a large indoor hangar that you can walk around – in and under the planes. (Yes there are drip pans under the engines.) You can even touch them, but they ask you not to. Anyway, it was an overnight success and more and more buildings were put up. If you go, you’ll want to go back again. I would be surprised if some of the planes are not flying during the event, but even if they are not, it’s a blast to look at them all. Most of them are pretty primitive. And if you come, you’d get to see my new wire wheels.September 1, 2012 at 6:31 pm #251577That’s a lot like the Wings and Wheels show at the Air Force Museum here in Warner Robins later this month. newkitman2012-09-01 18:32:07

"Drive Happy"September 1, 2012 at 7:26 pm #251579Great Bill! Hope that it works out.
Allen, Paul, Rocky, Ed, & Dale, – I know that you guys would enjoy the “Museum”. There were 40+ old planes that you could kick the tires on when I last went. These planes are most all owned by individuals, not the museum. They have the same passion for their machines that we do for our TD’s (just a wee bit more expensive). Might it even be possible to get the great Wobby to come? It’s only a 3 1/2 hour trip for me, but we drove 10 hours to go to Carlisle. Maybe we can make it multi car event of it? How about Larry and some of the other club members. It should be a great time for a ride, just after the tourist season and before a lot of you guys (not you Bill) put your TD’s away for the winter.September 3, 2012 at 6:55 pm #251580Bill, It doesn’t look like there is much interest in this show. I wrote to them and got a bit of info:
Roy,We do not have a kit car category, as I don’t think we’ve ever had any in attendance.Regardless, we’d love to have you guys join us. The show offers more than your average show, not to mention entry to the museum, which if you have folks that have never been, is worth the trip (they have a B-17 now). We have live music, great food, beer/wine, raffles, dogs for adoption, and Barrier Island Biplanes will be there selling rides in their 1942 Waco. It’s a great, low-key, but entertaining event. And, best of all, all the proceeds go to the SPCA and the local Foodbank…. not a dime to the club. There is parking for trailers. All the info you need is here:Hope to see some of you guys there.Regards,GeorgeOn Sun, Sep 2, 2012 at 2:21 AM, rfhendrix<rfhendrix@suddenlink.net>wrote:Hey George,I have been to the museum, but never on the day of the car show. I am trying to stir some interest among MG TDreplica.com (https://tdreplica.com) members in attending this year. Do you have a kit car class in the judging? Most of the 433 TD club members are geographically scattered – I know of no city which has more than one member. Attendees that I can rustle up will most likely drive their cars rather than tow but is there space for parking tow vehicles? We had 5 cars at the Carlisle show this year but 3 members who attended the Carlisle show without their cars, now have them on the road. Two members brought their cars from >400 miles and we had members there from Vermont to Florida. I think that there are 11 cars in NC.Is there anything in particular, that you might know of, that I may pass along to whet the appetite of TDreplica.com members? Thanks,Royal (Roy) Hendrix (Club name Royal)New Bern, NCan early riser @ 262 671 0067 (but I’m 71 and it might be better to email me)September 3, 2012 at 7:22 pm #251581I’m considering this…assuming I get the TD running soon and can put some miles on her before I take a highway run like that.
Stay tuned….

"Drive Happy"September 15, 2012 at 9:24 am #251585OK. I have registered the wife’s MINI and my MG for this event.
I opted for flight line parking for both.
Made reservations at the Oceanfront Inn.
I hope we have company.
This will be the farthest this car will ever be from home.

"Drive Happy"September 15, 2012 at 10:23 am #251586Bill, I don’t see “flight line parking”. Did you sign up for the $50 per car “preferred parking”? We would like, of course, to park together. I expect to register later today bit will wait for your reply.
September 15, 2012 at 4:59 pm #251587yes, $50. preferred.

"Drive Happy"September 15, 2012 at 5:38 pm #251589Bill, I am having trouble signing in to register since I forgot that I already had a name & password from 2007 when I entered a rallye in my Mercedes 230SLK (it was a short romance – supercharger blew but we got 1st place in the rallye). Anyway, I need to contact the system admin & reset my password on Monday. It would be great if we could get some more guys to come. (The TD is a lot more fun than the MB230SLK). Julie & I are coming.

"Drive Happy"September 15, 2012 at 8:36 pm #251591If any of you TD’ers coming up from the deep(er) south want to make a pit stop at my home in New Bern, it’s on the way to Virginia Beach and we could put a couple of couples up for a night or two. Julie and I will probably leave early Sat morning for the 3-1/2 hour ride up. It’s a relatively nice country ride from here (albeit flat) to the airfield in Pungo. Send me a PM and we could make a mini caravan from here.

September 16, 2012 at 8:18 pm #251592Bill, (and Paul), map shows 5 1/2 hours from my house on I-95. That’s a long run in Bridget & I know there’s no way I could get Karen to agree to it. I, however, am intrigued by the idea–especially in November, when we could be dealing with weather.
I might consider it if I’m in a convoy.
What would be your proposed routes?

"Drive Happy"September 17, 2012 at 6:57 pm #251594I’m in. Lets get some more of “us” to go. See you there.
September 17, 2012 at 7:40 pm #251595Jeez, Bill, 13 wasn’t even on my map. That’s 270 miles and 6:20. With a substantial pile of tolls.
I’ve done part of it & the road through Dover isn’t so bad.
U.S. 17 South is the no-highway route I had. 10 miles shorter but four minutes longer. Tolls that way too.
September 18, 2012 at 7:31 pm #251596Running 17 wouldn’t be a problem. Coming south on 83 to Baltimore where would
we hook up with you?
PM me a copy of route from Mapquest or something. Let me see where we’re going.Bill Ascheman

September 24, 2012 at 9:29 pm #251598OK Bill, Paul. Still trying to work this out. I’ll be solo if I go and this is a 6+ hour run for me. So we’re thinking what? Sat AM early early departure? Like, on the road at 5 a.m. in the dark, meet up circa Wilmington, DE for breakfast at 7 or 8 & run the Eastern Shore down to VA Beach by noon or so?
Then overnight at the hotel, toss back a few cold ones, and bang it on home the next morning?
Is that more or less the idea?
September 25, 2012 at 9:37 pm #251599PM-ing with Bill we’re now running down to VA on the West side of the Chesapeake, along (if not on) I-95. Still hoping to attract more TDs to the convoy.
