Could be my bad memory Mark. Sorry for misquoting.
But I do have a question….
If VW built their cars for 3,000 rpm at 60mph, and a Freeway Flyer trans has the engine turning 2,500 at 60 mph, is the lower fan speed a problem? -
Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic New member Shifting Question in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 8 months ago
Paul…can’t figure where I posted against using Freeway Flyers. Using one in these little light cars, IMHO they are GREAT! The first Pink MG had one and I plan on using one in the very light Volksrod I am building.
A “Freeway Flyer” usually has a higher 4th gear and higher ratio ring and the pinion from Super Beetle transaxle. Some builders just…[Read more] -

Wouldn’t it have been more useful to bend the stock sending unit float rod down so that the gauge reported the bottom half of the tank instead of the top?
That was a great answer on electronic sensors. -

Uh oh.
That link used to go to FrankieD’s PayPal account. And I thought the PayPal link had been disabled.
In fact I just tried it and got a dead end at PayPal.
Do you know who you actually sent the money to? -

LOL!
I ran for 25 years using the odometer only.
I had a stock VW sender in my Duchess’ custom tank. The sender only reached about halfway down the tank.
I would know when the tank was full. As it started to empty the needle would start to bounce around. And when the tank was still half full, the needle would be on zero.
In the first couple m…[Read more] -

As usual, Paul, you seem to be the Answer Man. After looking at those prices, though, and at my available cash, I think the best option would be to just keep watching the odometer. At least for now. Thanks.

This was a good topic. I felt the same way when I got my VW based TD. Ed and Allen are right about the 45-50 range before shifting into 4th.I had never owned a vw before, but friends that had, told me to keep the revs on it and explained why. I agree with what Paul said about the engine sounding like its gonna explode at 3 grand, but when we t…[Read more]

I know. Everything Ed and Allen wrote sounds counter-intuitive, right?
That is probably because most of us are so used to water cooled engines. We all assume high RPMs mean more sparks and more combustion, all of which should mean MORE HEAT.
But…our lovely air-cooled VWs are cooled by the fan blowing air over and around the cylinders. The fan i…[Read more] -

The foam in a fuel cell serves two purposes. It minimizes fuel sloshing around in the tank. In the event the tank and bladder are ruptured, the foam causes the fuel to drip out instead of pour out (like a sponge holding water).
The foam will interfere with the float and arm on a traditional fuel sender.
You need an electronic sending unit with no…[Read more] -

I’m just learning too. First time I drove Bridget, with the PO riding shotgun, he’s all like, “you’ve got to rev it! it likes to be revved.” I didn’t wanna. I learned to drive a stick on a 1970 Camaro with a 350 and a 2 bbl. That motor ran out of wind at about 4200. It had plenty of grunt at 2000 though . . .Anyway, these are nothing like that,…[Read more]

No big rush. Like many of our fellow replicants, I’ve relied more on my odometer than on the fuel gauge to know when it’s time to top up. To tell the truth, I don’t even know the reason for the foam, and wonder if my best bet (since the Lafer is not running circle track races) would be to drive until the tank is almost dry and just pull the foam…[Read more]

I typically don’t shift into 4th gear until 45 – 50 mph when I’m out of a lot of traffic.
The major reason for running in 3rd gear at lower speeds(stop and go traffic for instance) is to keep the fan moving at a faster speed to push cooiling air around the cylinders. Also, and maybe in the book (haven’t read it in a while) many aftermarket folks…[Read more] -

I can’t prove a connection. But since I locked the “Other Stuff For Sales” forum, the numebr of spam posts has dropped signifcantly.
I’m still seeing a high volume of spam user ids get regsitered. So I do think blocking that forum has had an efect. Unless you all think we need it reactivated, I’m leaving it locked.

John Muir had his own technique for checking Beetle engine temps. Alas, it’s not in the current editions of “The Volkswagen For The Compleat Idiot”.
It’s a Goldilocks technique.
Drive the car until the engine is up to operating temp.
Put your hand on the dipstick.
If it is comfortable the engine is running cold.
If you can’t touch it, the…[Read more] - Load More
