I doubt if many shops today will know how to adjust the camber using the upper ball joints. If you didn’t remove the ball joints from the trail arms, you probably didn’t disturb the camber.
However, you are correct in the caster change when using the lower beam tube shims. So, almost any shop can tell you what the caster and camber is and set the…[Read more] -

That tube you have is acting as balance tube between the manifolds. I’d connect the “034” vacuum to a tee in that line.
I have a brand new “034” in the box with a Pertronix Ignitor installed. I bought it from Aircooled.net for $250. I never installed it, buying an “010” centrifugal from Glenn Ring and installing a #1844 Pertronix Ignitor i…[Read more] -

Yes my dual 34mm delorotos each have a vacuum port. At the moment I have a vacuum hose connecting them to each other. Is the 034 dizzy a dual vacuum or willI have to “T” the two and connect it to the 034?

I had the divot for the center grub screw right, but the ones on the ends were opposite what they needed to be (?) So I pulled the springs out, swapped them end for end and reinserted. Then the divots and grub screws lined up right everywhere. Logically, this made no sense to me either, but it worked. As for alignment. Hmm. I’ll for sure do it in…[Read more]

Ed, it’s called demand…magneto’s are old technology and do not make the voltage of today’s coils/MSD type “boxes”. Most race cars don’t even use them anymore.
Get rid of the “009”, they’re horrible. Get an “010” or “019” from Glenn Ring on the SAMBA. Install a Pertronix (you may have modify the rotor slightly). You won’t believe the di…[Read more] -

Ed, don’t think it matters how the leaves go into the tubes….it only matters that they go through the center “alignment” square.
To get them in, I actually assembled the control arm and bushing on one end of the leaf stack, snugged the snub nut and inserted them into the tubes. Then I put the seals and control arm on the other side.
Don’t…[Read more] -

OK, everyone, Paul has sent me some sweet, big format shots of his car. I’m going to re-do a couple months because, when I put the first round shots into the calendar on line, I got a message on some of them that the photos were too low-resolution to print at that size. The message came on the May shot (Paul took that one, I’m in it), the…[Read more]

And the new beam is back together. Took some doing. Turns out you can put the springs in backwards. I did that on the top beam and discovered it only after putting the lower control arms on. The uppers wanted to face about 180 degrees away from the lowers. Had to pull the springs and turn them end-to-end. Anyone who has done this job knows it’s a…[Read more]

Did you post any pictures?

Keep looking for that chassis, they’re out there.BTW, anyone have any idea why a magneto would cost $1400? Seems a bit fat for–what is it?–100 year old technology? Seems like just like cake costs 5x normal price if it’s called “wedding cake,” parts cost 5x more if they’re “aircraft parts.”Or am I too cynical?

Ed, Thanks for the tech article. Interesting reading. I’ll probably stick with my 009 dizzy,1641 with dual 34mm carbs and doghouse oil cooler. I’d love to have a Bernie Bergman fan shroud but they too are very costly. BTW…Had a lead on a chassis but it fell through. I’ll keep looking. Stay warm out there!

What’s the point? (get it?–nudge nudge) Go with a Pertronix & call it a “magneto” if you want. Normal automotive distributors’ll still run with no battery if your alternator/generator is turning. (ask me how I know). And if the generator quits you better pull over anyway since, unlike on an airplane, it usually means your fan isn’t turning &…[Read more]

Sorry, Paul. Best pic of the Duchess I found was like 173kbs. I tried to keep these shots above 300.The speedster folks insist on only high-res–like 2-3mb and above. Maybe next year?Meantime, if I don’t hear any objections by tomorrow I’m gonna go ahead and try to set up a buyable calendar on line. The price will be the website’s alone–no profit for me.
