POR-15. I’ve used it a few times. Expensive but worth it. Super good stuff for rust and it works good also for crapped up gas tanks (although a new VW tank is not much more expensive and is preferred).

Paint over the rust converter with Por 15. I’ve never used it. But I know guys that swear by the stuff.

Planning for Carlisle almost made me forget the eight inches of snow I cleared off my driveway this weekend. Almost.

Just made reservations! Google says 9 hrs, 53 min, 658 miles via I-90 E and I-76 E. Will probably be leaving about 5 AM.

What I learned today is that you shouldn’t spend all afternoon trying to compound out scratches. Excellent solution for removing oxidation but for scratches of any real note see gkesseru above, or learn to live with it. With apologies to the perfectionists out there I’m going with the latter.

Look for “rust converters” rather than “rust removers” — the converters act in place, converting the rust to a solid surface, while removers are intended to clear it away, usually by washing.
If you plan to do LARGE areas, you may want to consider this one, since it is available in gallon jugs, at a price lower than Eastman’s or other auto… -

Thanks very much for the responses. I will order the Autosol stuff and try it out. Sanding all the way out to 2000/3000 is just a bit much work! If I can get it done using just a buffer-I’m a happy camper.

Back to the subject of cooling, especially after reading about others having cooling issues with their VW TDrs here…
Couple things that a lot of folks don’t realize about factory VW cooling:1. When VW upgraded to dog-house coolers and the larger cooling fans for the dual-port engines, they also had to start adding vents to the engine… -

Here is a link to the Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association (SEMA) “toolbox” that lists the titling and inspection laws for every state:
As previously stated, the laws vary significantly from state to state. Many states allow you to title the frame/running gear (ala VW… -

Using the vin number from any other car would be tubae in many states. Say you’re using the vin number from a VW. Clearly this new car doesn’t represent that VW model.I know in MA you could get in hot water for using a vin number that doesn’t represent the actual car. I titled my car in MA with a vin something like MA2349. Then did a title tra…[Read more]

That short VIN number is frequently used for “home-built or “reconstructed” vehicles.
States title these things differently — some title them using the OEM VW VIN number, if it’s a VW TDr. If it is a Ford or Chevy based kit, it would most likely be titled as a home-built or custom … Factory built kits likely are titled as customs, also u… -
