I use a Torque Meister tool. Good for torqueing and breaking loose flywheel gland nuts and rear axle nuts. Uses separate gearing for each and I think the ratio is near 10 to 1. (300 ft. pounds on rear axle nut with 30 ft. pounds on torque wrench.) Check it out on eBay or any VW parts house. Mine was Christmas present a few years…[Read more]

There’s really no secret to removing one, other than perhaps how to hold the flywheel while you do so. Here’s the tool designed to do that:
In use:
I use about a 4 foot long “pipe cheater” on a breaker bar to remove the gland nut…But, if you’ve never done this, you’re perhaps better off to load up the engine and haul it to a VW shop to get i… -

Hey Bill, your name sure sounds familiar. Have we met at some event or another? Do you frequent the Cars & Coffee thing out on the north side?

OK, so looked closer at my top and here are the corrections. The front bow is 41.25 inches, which is 1.25 or so more than the top of the windshield, not 2 inches.
The connectors are not barrels but apparently are instead two pieces of metal plate: one for the bottom of the bow, morticed in like a hinge and affixed some way I can’t see as long… -

There is an article in the current American Rifleman on the ammo situation. Bottom line, more shooters and folks are stocking up. The ammo manufacturers have started gearing up, but expect shortages for at least the next 6 months. On the driving side, we are going thru our typical winter cycle of warm front/rain, cold front/clear. Mostly rai…[Read more]

The V-8 conversion is really not all that difficult. If, as you say, you have deep pockets. You can also drop a lot of coin on a blower for the NA model.

Paul is in! I’m going out Thursday. In 2013, we had eight TDrs and one TFr in the group photo. There was one other TDr that stayed for only a few hours on Saturday. So technically nine TDrs, the if you want to count the TFr.

One more suggestion. Come to the show in Carlisle Pa in May and get lots of ideas and pictures. You are not the only TDr that does not (yet) have a top.

Ed’s right again on all counts.
I would add that it is very important that you know what you want before talking to the canvas guys. I think that it would be fair to say that there are more differences between each of our tops than there are similarities. Take a couple of pictures of a TD that has what you want. For instance, many of the top… -

Should be easy to make for a boat top shop. The frame you can make yourself.
It’s two aluminum hoops, 41 inches wide at the open end. The tall (rear one) is 20 inches tall, The front one is a couple inches shorter.Bimini top hardware connect them.My inside mounts look like these. (Some other replicas use a top mount hardware)The tube… -
