engine niose

    I am finaly driving the car after rebuild but the engine niose inside the car is very loud. ant ideas or is this normal?

    With a VW based TD you are sitting where the rear seat used to be. There is very little room between you and the engine…about 18 inches. There isn’t much you can do to keep down the noise. I’ve read here that adding heat insulation in the engine compartment area helps some but other than that…..ear plugs.

    Like they said…

    YES. The engine noise is normal! No soundproofing, and you are sitting a couple feet in front of an air-cooled engine.

    My car seems louder with the top up than down. Either the space is more confined as is the noise, or else in the open air the wind noise blocks it out.
    Get ear plugs if it bothers you, and it will also save your hearing!, and you will be less fatigued, especially on a long trip

    I think the top acts sort of like a megaphone, focusing the engine noise.
