I know power was out in the Carolinas earlier this afternoon. My special lady has evacuated New York City and is going to be bunking up in New Jersey.
I hope everyone survives this storm without too much damage.
August 27, 2011 at 12:43 am #246054Thanks Mark.
My daughter and her mother (aka “future ex”) are just north of I-78 in NJ. Latest national weather service data says they should be seeing sustained winds between 40 and 75 mph. And about a foot of rain in a 12 to 18 hour period. My old house is surrounded by beautiful, old, TALL, oak trees. Hopefully they stay standing!
I’m a bit better off in eastern PA.
Still, this is nothing the northeast is used to.
Does “special lady” live in one of the mandatory evacuation zones in NYC? A mandatory evacuation has NEVER happened in NYC.

August 27, 2011 at 2:51 am #246055Paul,
Let’s hope that the oaks stay away from the garage your TD lives in.

August 27, 2011 at 10:01 am #246056I’m not sure if my girlfriend lives in a mandatory evacuation area, but I would think so. She’s only a few miles from Coney Island in Brooklyn. Her daughter lives in Hoboken, NJ, very close to the water. They’ve gone inland into New Jersey for a few days, ahead of the mandatory evacuation and transportation shut down. I’m sure they’re going to get a lot of rain and high winds, but she feels safer there.
August 27, 2011 at 12:35 pm #246057As a veteran of countless hurricanes and tropical storms since 1960 here in Houston, my sincere best wishes are with all of you who either live in or have loved ones along the Eastern Seaboard. If you’ve never gone through a hurricane, you have no idea how truly terrifying they can be. And the cleanup afterward can be dangerous, too. While removing plywood from the window of my wife’s second-floor studio after Rita, I fell and ended up with a surgically reconstructed 10-piece titanium ankle. Please let us know how everyone did.

Got the boat battery on trickle charge in case I need it for the sump pump backup. With the daily drivers and Bridget that’ll make five batteries, three of them deep cycle, and so that should get us through two-three days without power.
Expect water in the garage so I picked up all the tools and stuff in there. Hope it’s not too deep.
Good luck to all.
August 28, 2011 at 11:48 am #246059Hope everybody is OK so far!
My house is fine. Really minor leak in basement. But property and house are ok.
So is my former residence where my daughter and her mother live. they are without power. But they, the house and the property are ok.
Wind is still an issue here in NJ and eastern PA. But most of the rain is over.

August 28, 2011 at 12:23 pm #246060glad to hear that you weathered things pretty well. I hope that that goes for all of our TDers and their families.
August 28, 2011 at 12:45 pm #246061It’s not over for NJ and PA. The wind is really whipping out there.
And our New England friends are still in the midst of it.

August 28, 2011 at 12:45 pm #246062I gotta go out & mend fence. Otherwise, no damage.
August 28, 2011 at 2:22 pm #246063Paul and Ed I’m glad you folks are okay. Haven’t heard from my cousin in Ridgewood NJ But that should mean they are okay. Rest of my family are in the west or midwest. Hope the New England TDers and their families fair okay.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 28, 2011 at 3:12 pm #246064Lots of flooding and trees down all over NJ.
Road closures in Ridgewood, NJ, according to the town’s web site:
- East Saddle River Road between East Glen Ave & Bingham Road
- Hillcrest Road between Hamilton & Avondale
- Linwood Avenue between Maple Avenue & Collingwood
- South Irving between Spring & Grove
That could be flooding or downed trees. Hope your cousin is not on any of those streets.
Haven’t seen anything else about Ridgewood, except…
The local Chamber of Commerce is hosting a car show from 6pm to 10p,m on Friday September 9. Bring the TD up and visit your cousin! LOL!

August 28, 2011 at 3:14 pm #246065Hey Ed…me too! Finally did a walk around on the property. Found one broken fence post. Did a temporary fix so it doesn’t pull the fence down.
And cleaned a ton of leaves and small stuff out of the pool.
Still a heck of a wind out there.

August 28, 2011 at 4:12 pm #246066Fortunately she doesn’t live in those areas. And I’ll be driving back from vacation on the 9th to get home for a golf tournament for the local Disabled Vets on the 10th. Plus the TD is nowhere near being completed. Perhaps in the spring (I hope). I’d love to drive her to Carlisle in 2012.

August 29, 2011 at 11:22 am #246068Anyone hear from Wobby? He had some bad flooding earlier this year, I believe.
August 29, 2011 at 11:40 am #246069Wobby lives in Northfield. That’s a little bit south and west of Montpelier, up in the Green Mountains. It’s in a valley in those mountains so I hope he and his family are okay. They may be out of power there for a bit.
I liked it up there. had a cousin who attended the college there and would run up there to visit every now and again. They have a really neat covered bridge there too. Great area to live in especially if you enjoy the fall colors. Stuff fall calendars are made of.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 29, 2011 at 3:48 pm #246070I can sure sympathize with you guys all along the east coast. We live with the constant threat of Hurricains here in Southern Louisiana. Hope everyone stays safe.
August 29, 2011 at 6:57 pm #246071I talked to Wobby.
He’s ok. House is ok. Ally (his TD) was on jack stands and is ok. His office and garage had two feet of water…leaving behind “mud everywhere”.

August 29, 2011 at 7:57 pm #246072Whew! Glad Wobby made it. Sounds as if all our TD members weathered the storm. Glad of that. Just keep an eye on the TS off the coast of Africa. It’s a big one and should arrive at the east coast sometime in 10 days. Living in Georgia I tend to keep an eye out for hurricanes and monitor the National Hurricane Center just in case.

August 30, 2011 at 12:36 pm #246074My best friend lives in Andover, NJ, and apart from a spot of what he called “seepage” in the basement, he and his wife got through it OK. Haven’t heard anything yet from Aaron White in Lake Lure, NC. Fingers crossed.

August 31, 2011 at 10:38 pm #246076I talked to Mark this evening. He’s fine.
