Everyone that I know that grew up during my “era” is/was a “car nut”.  All my friends had big American Model A’s, hot rods, macho custom jobs, and muscle cars.  But my particular interest lay in my “strange little cars” like: Crosley (not exactly a chick magnet), Bug-Eyed AH Sprite, Sunbeam Alpine, a horrid little Simca, MGTF-1500, Porsche 911S, Willys CJ2A, Lancia Zagato, TR6, Jensen Healey, Mercedes 230SLK, and now a Daytona MiGi VW powered TD “kit car”.  After discovering the link below, I spent entirely too much time looking over all the cars owned by the guys that could not understand my passion.  See:

    http://www.lov2xlr8.no/broch1.html

ps:  Of my cars, only the Bug Eyed Sprite would turn heads like the T series MG’s.

Great site…I enjo looking at older cars.  When I was stationed in England I fell in love with three cars over there. My neighbor had a tan MG Midget, my boss had the last year of the TR6 a green one (he sold it for a red TR-7 Doorstop) and I had a white Mini Clubman. But still wanted the MG dealerships TC. British Racing Green and oh baby!!!!

Actually my first love was a Singer Nine.  In the mountains of NY, it was owned by an “old guy” across the street (he was all of 45 but I was only 15).  He drove it maybe 3 times in 5 or so years that I knew him.  If you want to see why my favorite was the T series MG’s, check out the Singer Nine and you will know:

Love the ’48 Tucker brochure on that site. I’d forgotten that was a rear-engine design with an aluminum flat 6. Probably ought to rent the movie…

Above were only my “toy” cars in the 57 years since my first.  I didn’t include any of my family cars including a Maserati, ’41 Chrysler, 4 VWs, a super nice 55 Olds Conv., ’65 Catalina, + a host of others plus soccer mom cars, vans, etc.  It has always been a weakness (sickness?) of mine.  I just started thinking about my “fleet” while waiting for the game to start on one of my rare “sick days”.

    That Singer Roadster is awesome!

And you guys are my idols. 350 cars? Wow!

    I’m 53 and don’t even hit 10 cars!

    • 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 convertible (with factory A/C!!!)
    • 1973 Opel Manta Gt (when the improted Opels were teh good German cars, not the Jap stuff that came later)
    • 1973 Dodge Dart (ok, boring, but I needed somethign relaible to get me back and forth to college!)
    • 1986 Dodge 600 Convertible
    • 1989 Mercury Sable wagon (bought used after my daughter was born. Needed the space to haul all her stuff. A boring car but at least I NEVER went the mini-van route)

And then the Volvo’s started coming….

    • 1996 850
    • 1999 S80 T-6 (my daughter has this now)
    • 2009 C70 (hardtop convertible – the future ex has this. DAMN!)
    • 2009 S80

In between…I built my Classic Roadsters Duchess in 1982.

And I got my 1965 Plymouth Satellite Convertible in 1998

Pictures of all of them, and others that I “borrowed” over the years are on my Facebook Page.

Oldbuzz, 350?  Wow!  Did you own a dealership?

Paul,  My first new car was a 1969 Dodge Dart with a “slant six” but I didn’t want to admit it.  Traded a beautiful loaded Olds 88 convertible on it.  Hated myself ever since.  You’ve still got time to catch up, – I’ve got 18 years on you.

Don’t think I hit 350 maybe 100-150 range if I include all the junkers I drug home for parts.

That brings me to another er.. situation.. I have a chance to get a ’70 something TR6 and two 19?? Volvos.  Mostly for scrap price.  He just wants them gone, the way his wife talked.   The Triumph has been sitting with a tarp on/off at least  15 years, the Volvos are in the garage.  I haven’t seen them yet.   If I get these I’ll have to move them FAST to keep peace with the better half.

My 1st car was a 57 Chevy 2 door with a 283. Switched to a 59 Impala, then a 49 Ford. after that it was a 65 Corvair Monza Spider, a Toyota Celica, Ford Pinto, AMC Pacer, AMC Hornet, Autsin Mini Clubman, Toyota Corolla Wagon, Volvo, Pontiac STE, Buick LeSabre, Ford Escort,  Ford ranger, Chevy Silverado, 74 VW Karmann Ghia, and now the new Silverado and TD replica. In the mix of all those were various VW Beetles and a VW Transporter. The car I had the most fun with was the 49 Ford with a flathead six. But looking forward to completing the TD and enjoying her the rest of my days.

Well to update on the 350.

Most were bought as parts cars, aquired for $25-$50,some were traded for somthing different,I think it was a touch of ADD in my younger days.Somtimes I think it still is.I would venture a guess that 70% of the cars were drivable, and I did drive most of them for a short time.A couple of the more memorable ones.

    61 ford unibody pick-up

    65 ford wagon with a BOSS 302 and 4 speed,a real sleeper

    60 GMC panel truck

    70 SS camaro ok 70 1/2

70 opel sedan with twin carbs and a 4 speed

Ok well I guess I’m the young buck in this but thought I would share.

First car was a ’76 Ford Mustag II 4 cylinder (never got to drive it as I was only 13 at the time.)  Dad bought it for us to tinker with but never got her road worthy before we had to move across Texas.  Sold her but she was the best looking baby blue Mustang II (in my opinion) that ever was.  Dad bought me a Honda Elite 50 S when I was old enough to drive it and I drove that to school and to drivers ed to get a license.  After we moved I found a Honda 250 Rebel that I could toy around with in High School.

Then I started my run through drivable cars, trucks and motorcycles.

    • 1985 Chrysler LaBaron
    • 1985 Ford F150 (351 Windsor with dual glass pack)
    • 1990 Suzuki Samuri (rebuilt motor once then replaced with 1.6 liter for the extra horsepower = 107) could pull anything with the rock crawler gears I had in it.
    • 1995 Honda Rebel 250 (this one was street legel and I drove it from south of Houston to Bryan and back to visit my cousins at A&M.  long ride on a little bike)
    • 1991 Ford Mustang LX Hatchback (Had more power in the sound system than the motor)
    • 1997 Suzuki GSXR 750 (race suspension ME-Z3 race compound tires. Road from Albuquerque, NM to Bakersfield, CA and back in just over 36 hours just because I could.)
    • 1998 Citroen Xantia (Stationed in England Right side drive 5 speed with hydraulic adjusted suspension)
    • 1963 Austin Mini 850 (purchased for 50 Pounds)
    • 1964 Austin Mini 998 (Ran like a dream had the larger ralley wheels on it and was a bright orange.  you could see it commin.)
    • 1991 Nissan D21 Pickup (Still have it today may be my sons first truck)
    • 1998 Ford F150 4X4 (straight 6 with 3 in body and 2 in suspension lift on 38 in tires.  all of 10 miles per gallon down hill with the wind at my back LOL)
    • 1998 Chevy Cheyenne Stepside (305 Vortec)
    • 2005 Pontiac GrandAm (V6)

    And the piece de resistance

    • 1952 MG TD replica (Modern Corsair built on 74 Karmann Ghia rear 1600cc and VW bus front)

    Geez….

If my math is right, a “young buck” here is defined as 48 years old!

I’m pleased to be only five years removed from “young buck” status.

But if we are typical, there will be no one to take over these cars when we’re done!

Stay tuned for another thread on this topic….

Yeah, I realized how dumb my comment was. The car was a ’76, but that doesn’t mean bought it new when you were 13. Major “duh” moment for me.

And…Damn! that also means I’m not five years away from “young buck”
