I am going to install a radio in my MGTD (Chevette) kit car. I do not want to cut into the dash — so I am looking for suggestion on location and type. Also — where does the Antenna go?
Bill. Most owners mount the radio in the dash where the glove box door is on the original MGs. Most put the antenna on the right side of the cowel. Look in the photo gallery to see DanR and stickney’s cars for an alternate under dash mount. Ringo put his unit in the glove box and has some additional equipment behind the seat in another location. Personally, I just listen to the purr of the engine and the song in my heart,of coarse, I ‘m getting to be an old guy according to my grandaughter.
The hole on the right side on my dashboard is only about 2 inches by 4 1/2 inches — If it is for a glove box — they would have to be small. I can enlarge the hole — but wondered what other choses there are. Is there a specific cover that goes over the rectangular hole?
Mine’s in the dash. Thinking I’ll redo the dash someday and put it behind a glovebox door. The antenna is pretty neat–it runs along the inside of the hood, driver’s side, just below the hinge. Invisible and works great. mine’s a VW, but suppression spark plug wires should make the style work for front engine cars too.
Bill, that 2×41/2 hole is where the kit planned for the radio to go.It probably required a hole on each side for the control knobs. You could enlarge it to fit whatever unit you choose .Just a suggestion,it’s up to you.
