Balmy 28 with flurries here in Ohio, I think my choice will be the Carolina’s if I ever get the chance.
December 30, 2013 at 9:13 pm #258117OK, back in the garage after a lazy weekend of doing pretty much nothing. I tried to cut down my front trans mount to give me the 3/4-inch or 7/8ths I need for the new transmission position. I was really proud of the grinding job I did on both the old welds and the steel mount itself.
Unfortunately, when I mocked it up, I was still like half an inch-plus short of where I needed to get to.Decided to build a mid-mount system instead. Got that started.edsnova2013-12-30 21:15:06
December 31, 2013 at 3:35 am #258118That’s not a bad idea. Put the mounts where you want them instead of where the factory put them. Continuing the tradition of “no two being alike”.

"Drive Happy"December 31, 2013 at 2:28 pm #258119Thanks, Bill. I think that’s the way to go with this.
Just ordered my timing belt kit $350–ouch!–and my oil separator (another $45 or so from the dealer). Got some gaskets and conferred with my exhaust guy about how to do the coolant pipes. He told me he can’t bend 1.25-inch aluminized exhaust, assuming he can find it. Even primary header pipes are at least 1.5 inch, so the stuff I want is rare at best.Schedule 40 6061 aluminum might be the way forward. That’s about 1 5/8 OD and so the rubber hoses from that will plug right into my engine outlets. But I will still have to step down for the radiator. Looking into that. Also ordered some metal for fab-up purposes. A little square tube, a little C-channel and some plate to make some brackets and other stuff. I’m about to pull the bent steel crossmember from under my running boards to see if I can straighten that out.January 1, 2014 at 10:20 pm #258120OK, worked out some numbers, thought some thoughts, bent some metal and cut some fiberglass.
Basically it’s going to be 1.5-inch aluminized for the radiator pipes and .375-inch schedule 40 aluminum for the heater hoses.I’ve got the trans/engine mount squared away and now I can see where everything should go.Everything, that is, except for the air intake at the top of the motor. . . .January 3, 2014 at 4:41 pm #258121I have found that I can buy 10′ outdoor antenna mast pipes that are 1.25″ od, 1.125 id.I have a Harbor Freight rolling wheel that I have upgraded with kits from Swag Off Road. I am going to try to bend that pipe to conform to the outside edge of the VW pan and thus route the radiator lines within the heat channel area. Finally got the engine and wiring harness out of the Subaru! I have worked on the alternator brackets to clean them up for powdercoating. I have modified them to eliminate all the excess protrusions.Working toward freeing the fuel tank from the subaru so I have bits and pieces for the fuel delivery system.January 3, 2014 at 6:36 pm #258122Very Cool. You are way ahead then! Please post on fuel delivery. I am planning on a Ford truck external pump and home-brewed lines running in those heat channels. But have not really dug hard into the details yet. Would be cool to just drop the Soob pump into the VW tank…?

January 4, 2014 at 11:02 pm #258123Digging into the Suby wires now while awaiting my new timing belt kit.January 5, 2014 at 9:17 pm #258124First actual modification of the engine is done.
So help me, I WILL saw that sucker down to make it fit.January 5, 2014 at 10:00 pm #258125Just think, when you get this done, you’ll be ready the WRX engine upgrade… :P;)

Slowly coming back from the ashes...January 12, 2014 at 8:54 pm #258126January 12, 2014 at 9:17 pm #258127Plug gap .020?? Sounds thin, but you’re the expert. Also sounds like you’re about ready to fire it up?? What’s your ETA??
January 12, 2014 at 9:21 pm #258128Plug gap is .041, Roy. There’s two feelers there.
We’re getting there. But much to do. I still need to run the pipes under the car. Still also waiting on a clutch disk.Need to shorten my shift rod and finish up the trans mount.Need to run fuel lines and buy a fuel pump and hook all that up.Then there’s the wires. Oh, the wires. The wires, man.The terrible, terrible wires . . .Hoping to get a first start circa April 10.January 12, 2014 at 9:54 pm #258129It’s hard to believe we need all those wire to make it run isn’t it? Oh well, where is the challenge in simply running a hot wire to a coil?
I was thinking of running the wires in clear tubing and adding some LEDs randomly throughout the harness.January 12, 2014 at 10:20 pm #258130The backup plan abides.
January 12, 2014 at 11:22 pm #258131Don’t give up. It can be done. Just imagine how sweet it will be when finished.
February 2, 2014 at 12:43 pm #258132Small progress. I’ve been sick all week with a monster cold (or flu?). Even stayed home from work one day last week. Today I got back into the garage anyway and made a little progress on the front transmission mount. Think I’ve got something that will work.
February 2, 2014 at 2:12 pm #258133Feel your pain and frustration Ed. Been sick since Friday. On the mend and hope to get back at it tomorrow or Tuesday depending on if I’m better or not.

February 2, 2014 at 6:42 pm #258135The right way to say it, around the old Electric Boat works in Groton, is “barn waar.”
February 22, 2014 at 5:56 pm #258136…and barnin’ waaar…This ugly thing is half of my new front transaxle frame mount. I hammered on it and we seem to have a weld here, despite how it looks. Onward.:-)edsnova2014-02-22 17:56:58
