Ed,
Heater cores are notorious for trapping air.Your temp probe may be in the air pocket.Filling the heater core and hoses is a good idea.BDriver -

Ed,
Do you have a loop of hose that is higher than the radiator cap?Do you have a vertical loop of hose anywhere in the system?Either will trap air when the system is emptied. It sounds as if you have an air bubble that is stopping coolant flow. Once you have that out of the system it should work normally. That the overflow tank… -

Greg,
The emergency brake lever pushes one set of shoes in the rear brakes against the drums.Make sure that the rear brakes are properly adjusted before you take up the slack at the lever. The adjusters at the lever are there to take up stretch in the cables, not to make up for rear brakes that need to be adjusted.BDriver -

I’m impressed that someone would spend the bucks to recreate one of the Art Deco cars of the period.
It puts the Auburn Speedster and Cord 810 into perspective. -

Is the clutch disengaging fully?
Do you have to push the pedal to the firewall to shift into first or reverse? Are you able to fully depress the clutch pedal fully? How much free play do you have at the top of the pedal. More than an inch is too much.BDriver -

Peter C. King replied to the topic FreeTop and Side Curtains in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years, 10 months ago
Regardless of whether or not it fits your car, somebody buy this top and side curtains and stash them for the day when someone else has the right car and needs a top. If no one wants to do that I will gladly take them and I don’t even have a TDR, yet.

Rick,
Give some thought to engine turning the aluminum panel. You can do it with an inexpensive drill press and a lot of patience.BDriver -
Peter C. King replied to the topic Question on ground system in the forum Membership 10 years, 10 months ago
The Kitplanes article recommends separate grounds. One for the starter/generator and another for the electronics and lights. You might even run separate grounds for the last two if you run a lot of gizmos or big lights. That keeps voltage spikes and errant signals from disturbing the rest of the electrical system.
We don’t run big lights or a… -

Four wheel disk brakes and coil springs all around. Put sway bars on it and you can out Porsche the Speedster replicas with that chassis. That is pretty.
Are the front and rear suspension purpose built or are they sourced from another car?PCKing -

Have you looked at the tank vent? If it’s plugged the fuel pump could be lowering pressure in the tank until it equals the suction of the pump. Open the cap the next time you drive the car. If it’s harder to turn and makes a sucking noise you have a plugged vent. Do you have the correct cap? Do you have a non-vented cap on a fuel system that expects one?

Rick,
Positively Negative, an article in the July 2014 issue of Kitplanes magazine takes a similar position to yours. The author advocates dedicated grounds instead of just bolting the wire to the closest bolt on the frame.BDriver -

Back when I was driving aircooled VWs, I regularly put 100k on engines, including 2 vans. I dropped the screen, torqued the heads and adjusted the valves at every 3000 mile oil change. It can be done. I’d put a spin on filter on one today. It’s a belt and suspender thing. It even acts like an oil radiator.
Has anyone checked the ther…[Read more] -

Did they even have oil filters when this engine was designed in the 30’s? We’re talking about an 80 year old design. It is elegant in its simplicity but you have to assume that VW would design oil filtration differently today. Why wouldn’t you want to filter the oil? -

Beware of used VW heater boxes. There is an asbestos gasket inside that compresses with time and allows exhaust gas to enter the car. It cannot be replaced. Granted, a TD isn’t as well sealed as a Type 1. But you still don’t want to breathe carbon monoxide.

This one is too pretty to cover up.
