Made it home from work today by 5:30. Tried putting the nut on, banging on it a bit, loosening the nut and banging some more, thinking I could jar it lose from the threads in the head. Got the vicegrips on it and…no go.I like Old Buzz’s idea but I don’t have a welder yet and don’t know how to weld. Don’t even have a torch. Figured welding a nut…[Read more]

I’ve had doors pop open while autocrossing…took rubber hood latches and installed as door locks. Doors can’t pop open now.

OK Guys,
IT looks like we have 2 or 3 more coming then the last couple of years – good deal.
If you want to join Paul and myself in the dinners and other functions please RSVP w/ Bruce ( info can be found on the speedster site above ) as they might run out of space ( sometimes as many as 60 -70 speedster guys ). I am sure we can sit w/ each other…[Read more] -

OK, convinced me. i just booked at Hotel Carlisle for Saturday night. Looks like the speedster guys are going for the banquet dinner that night at the hotel. Looks decent at $25. Karen and I wanna eat with you-all though, if you’re not going to be with them. When I booked she gave me three room choices. If that’s all that are left than better get on it.

OK Guys,
You are running out of time for a place to stay in Carlisle
if you want to go.
Paul and I will be staying at the same hotel as the
speedster guys and there are still a few rooms there if
you hurry. We have got to know those guys over the
years ( I am building a speedster as well ) and go on the
tours w/ them w/ our TD’s although sometimes…[Read more] -

I don’t believe the door was popping open before I fixed it. But it WAS rattly and gave me the impression it could pop open. Also, I don’t like it when things are put together wrong–even when I do it. So I fix, so I fix.Still got to get to the passenger side on mine. It’s not as worn as the driver’s side. I won’t be buying the accessory latches,…[Read more]

Hey Larry, just found another solution–belt and suspenders style. This guy wants 18 euros for it but it looks like something we could make in a vice.

That’s it!I think I’ve seen that bushing for sale for like $2 somewhere. I’ll bet it’s a joy to install. At least the seats won’t have to come out…. Then again, I’ll be moving the e-brake anyway….

Thanks, Richard. The shifter on this thing is incredibly sloppy. I’m too dumb to know if that’s “normal” for an old VW or not, but thinking maybe some bushings might need attention. Grease sounds like a good idea too. I’ll have a look at all the easy stuff before contemplating a major tear-down.

Clearly it’s got to shift a bit.
To relocate the striker properly I decided to use the existing shims as inside reinforcement for the fiberglass ?box? that secures the striker.
I drilled new holes in them
…and tapped them for the existing bolts.
This way the aluminum will add strength and maybe make it easier to reassemble this mess. I have no idea…[Read more] -

Larry, I’ve started another “door latches” thread, to document my attempt to get this right. So far I’ve taken the driver’s door striker off, drilled and tapped two of the (four) shims to put behind the fiberglass box these screw into, to reinforce it and make reassembly easier. I cannot imagine how any normal man could have reached into that…[Read more]

Richard, where is the timing set? At idle, are you at 7.5 before TDC, as with a single vacuum advance distributor, or at 5 after TDC, as is the custom with a double vacuum distributer? And since you have the 009 distributor, you’re supposed to time it at about 28-32 degrees max advance (2800 rpm+) instead of relying on the idle timing, according to…[Read more]

Wow, Chuck, interesting! I’ve not even driven Bridget enough to know if she rides too hard; right now I’m just doing what Pink advises–he makes a good case–but I’ll be very interested to hear how your deal works out. I’m hoping this torsion beam job won’t take me the rest of my life, but
pretty sure it won’t. I’m also at a stage in my life when…[Read more] -

Just took a look at mine, while waiting for the brake sender switch to come in. I know this is a dumb question, but the latch part on the door is supposed to end up in the hole on the striker, right?I ask because, on my strikers–and I’m pretty sure this whole assembly is stock TD stuff–the latch on both doors is going to a little notch. The…[Read more]
