Who said timing is simple? My race car builder neighbor came over, turned the distributor and set the timing by ear. He said Cologne engines never pay attention to the timing marks. He did the same for the carb. Now it starts really easy and pulls well. Can’t beat 30 years of race car experience.

I do similar with one change. Instead of pulling a plug and looking for a spark I hook up a test lamp to the dist/coil hot wire and slowly turn the dist until the light just turns on. Do this a couple of times turning the dist back and forth to get rid of any gear slop. You can turn the crank to exactly the timing angle you want and set up the…[Read more]

The bottom of the frame is exactly 5″ from the ground, front to back. That’s with 24″ diameter tires. The Mustang II (and Pinto) crossmember has a flat bottom and an angled top. It’s important to make sure that the bottom is parallel to the ground and not the top. That is why the front frame member is angled front to back. Yes it’s to tilt the top…[Read more]

Shifter is in exact location as originally designed by CMC. Matter of fact, I located the shifter in the middle of the shifter opening in the body pan and located the engine/transmission from that point forward. It’s quite comfortable at that spot. I have an Autocad sideview of the frame somewhere…..

I don’t have a VW so I’m just a bystander here..but, how hard would it be to pull the steering box and do your adjustment outside of the car? And then when it’s out, can you grind of some length of the adjustment screw?

If I were doing this, first thing I would do would be to remove all the glass (fenders, gas tank, splash pan) except for the body itself. Then get the engine to fit and reverse the process. Glass work can cover up much. Remember that the original gas tank has already been doubled in size to accomodate the VW engine. A little more can’t hurt.

According to AutomobileCatalog.comVW rear track is 53.1Mustang II rear track is 55.8Chevette rear track is 51.252 MG TD rear track is 50.My guess is that these fiberglass bodies were originally designed for the VW conversion, that”s why they all have the fake gas tank big enough to hide a VW flat 4 engine.

The fenders cover the tires nicely because the Ford Focus wheels have a whole lot of offset. The original 13″ Mustang wheels stuck out almost 2 inches.

I used 1-1/2 X 3 box 11 GA rectangular tubing. I welded extra gussets and straps on the outside of every main joint. Finished frame, including Mustang II crossmember is 200 pounds. The original frame was for a chevette and was made out of 2X4 1/8 inch tube. Extremely heavy, probably over 400 pounds. I can measure the body on my kit if you want.…[Read more]

If you’re serious about scrapping the VW appoach, you may want to look at my build thread. I threw out the frame that came with my kit and scratch built a frame based on Mustang II components. I have also considered other approaches, such as MGB, Chevy V6, Buick aluminum V8. If you don’t go the VW route, the driver is the width of the rear end.…[Read more]

Looking forward to seeing it in the car. I think that the piping will tie the interior with the body color without losing the brightness of the interior.

Consider usding the method they use for speaker enclosures on the Overhaulin TV show. Cover the frame tubes with plastic or masking tape. Get some stretchable fabric and stretch that over your frame, then impregnate that with resin. Once it sets, then you can build up the glass cloth to add strength. The tell us if it works…..
