Merry Christmas — Happy New Year to all…….
Carlisle in the spring followed by Va Beach in the fall — who could ask for more….????
…And I’ll finally get to see Ed’s new ride in the flesh…..
….hmmm — I wonder which car Ed will bring to each show — maybe he can rent a driver for the spare car and thus bring both to each event!!
Stay Well —

November 26, 2020 at 8:32 pm #307337Ed,
The car looks OUTSTANDING!!!! DO NOT SELL IT…. You need to keep it until you can buy another fine kit. That way you have an in-place reference to use in building the “new” kit….
THEN you can sell this beautiful blue “better than an original” “tribute” Porsche 550 RS Spyder……
THEN you can buy another and build it and then sell it and then buy another…… and…..
….after all, you do have a lift and welder and……can’t let that stuff go to waste!!.
Keep having fun….pray for a Carlisle and then a Virginia Beach in 2021.
Vicenc — Va Beach next year???? It’s only a little bit of a trip up from Fl…
Drive, Drive, Drive and stay COVID-19 free…..

June 5, 2020 at 8:30 pm #306930Hey Ed —
WOW!!!!!!!
Maybe Va Beach this year????
BTW, I just cast my vote for the best ever really blue DIY car on the Pelican site…..
Looking forward to sitting in the driver’s seat — just to see what a Mega DIY project feels like from the seat of the pants.
Cheers,

December 19, 2018 at 9:15 pm #305739Yup — not even a smidgeon of room left over in the cockpit heater installation. The only unit that I could find to fit the space was a heater made by Maradyne:
<h1 id=”title” class=”a-size-large a-spacing-none”>DC Auxiliary Heater, 12V, 10A, 7-1/16in. H Model 5030-12v

My cockpit heater install may have been harder (less space to play with) since the previous owner made some firewall changes to the kit that would have been difficult to undo……….Happy Jack
December 19, 2018 at 12:24 pm #305735MANYPENNY’S GOT HEAT!!
A while back (summer, I think) Bill posted his praise of both the cockpit heater and heated seats in his Ford-based Tdr. He made a good argument for my spending the $$ for the cockpit heater as well as the seat heaters (easy to install while I was completing the upholstery).
Well, I finally got the wiring done and I now have both cockpit heat AND HEATED SEATS!! Yea.
Thanks Bill for the advice and the push. Glad I did it!! I recommend the heated seat install to anyone with a Tdr who lives North of Miami, FL……

December 16, 2018 at 7:29 pm #305728Hey Bill
the fit looks really clean and tight. Getting the grill to line up with the hood on my Ford based TDr was a real challenge…glad to see you are making great progress in “un-oops’ing” your Tdr

December 10, 2018 at 7:03 am #305715Wow Bill … faster than a Subaru WRX…….and a Mini Cooper…… cool!!
Is it the new engine or the increased skill of the driver?
How do your current times compare to your times with the old engine?
Most importantly, how do your current times compare to the Sharpie’s times.?
By the way, I got your little round “thingie” via Roy but have not mounted it on ManyPenny yet — but I will take your advice and add it to the tow hitch bracket when I build one — thanks for thinking of it.
And Ed, we are overdue for the next post in the saga of the fine German Sports Car Project…..

November 28, 2018 at 11:59 am #305705So Ed, which country are you going to favor this coming Carlisle?
Should we be thinking Pound Sterling or Deutsche Mark?

November 3, 2018 at 7:59 am #305663Gregg,
I tok another route re: the spare on the Fiber Fab car I sold a few years ago: I found a spare that would fit under the hood —
I got the tire from ONLINETIRES.COM and mounted it on a standard VW 4-hole rim. Here’s the info:
176K5AFE FORMOZA FD1 – 165/45-15 FEDERAL FORMOZA FD1 68V – FEDERAL FORMOZA FD1 1 $50.53 $50.53
The spare/rim fit perfectly under the hood!!
…Just another option for carrying a spare
Have Fun

October 1, 2018 at 9:15 am #305550Why Ed,
Lookin’ good!! I would definitely put in the floor and the seat and sit in the car for at least an hour while you make “VROOM VROOM” sounds and pretend to be driving the car around one of the world’s most challenging race tracks!!
Great work!! Can’t wait to see the finished product at Carlisle next year!
Cheers

September 30, 2018 at 8:07 am #305546Hey Folks —
New Bern, NC is still in the “clean up” mode — Here’s a great video showing what our storm-ravaged town is dealing with — thanks to Royal for finding and forwarding this link —

September 19, 2018 at 9:07 am #305523Hey Folks,
I got back to New Bern yesterday afternoon — all is well, except for the two “portable garages” that are REAL portable now.
BCW TDr Emma came out unscathed except for a rip in the car cover. The Bugeye Merlin lost its car cover but the tonneau cover kept out most of the rain. A drying in the sun and Merlin should be back in the pink….
The white Ford powered TDr Manypenny rode out the storm in the garage…
Other than the portable garages and one of my side gates coming off of the hinges, all is well. QUITE a storm. I don’t have to experience that level of “fun” again…..
Thanks for your concern

September 3, 2018 at 5:08 pm #305496Sorry — broken link — try this one:
https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=krvN9eH3pr0
By the way, Roy suggested that the problem may be that the ignition is to far advanced. He said to 1st pull the center distributor wire going to the coil and try to turn over the engine. If the hesitation goes away, it is probably timing set too far advanced. If it still hesitates … ???
I’ll post the results tomorrow.
Thanks,
Happy Jack

September 3, 2018 at 3:39 pm #305495Here’s a link to you tube — this is what it sounds like trying to start….sorry about the shaky video but the phone was up against the windshield while I leaned into the car to start it…..
September 3, 2018 at 2:02 pm #305490Sorry —
I have a pull switch instead of the “start” position on the ignition key switch — (too much time around Ed — I had to make it act like a “real” TD or like my Bugeye — just a mechanical 2 contact pull switch that applies 12v to the starter solenoid ….
My key has just 2 positions on/off for the ignition — overkill? — yea but…what the hell….I had to knacker it up a bit…….
September 3, 2018 at 11:40 am #305486To all of you FORD TDr owners out there — (especially our expert in residence — Billnparts — )
I’m having starting issues with ManyPenny — it starts but only in certain positions of the crankshaft (I think)
Here’s the rest of the story: When I pull the start knob, the engine may turn over a bit and then come to a halt. When I release the start knob and try again, it may go a bit further and then stop again — or it may start right up on the 2nd (or 3rd) try.
Compression ration on the engine is 200 – 200 – 200 – 210.
Worn, weak starter? Starter solenoid? — BTW, the car has a brand new fully charged battery installed.
Bill, I know you “upsized” your 2.3 L Ford engine — did you have any starting issues? Do they make a high torque starter for that motor? Did you need one??
Help/Suggestions please……I am about to try the starter solenoid first (< $20) and then an OEM grade starter (not so cheap).
Y’all have a great happy and healthy Labor Day!!
(That’s kinda how we ancient, pseudo-Southern Yankee transplants talk in New Bern North Carolina when we are not knackered or sorting out things under the bonnet of our Little British Sports Cars on beautiful sunny warm holidays!! )
August 25, 2018 at 7:12 am #305464I got mine from eBay for around $75.00 with shipping included…something like this:
Mine came with 2 each 5-level controls (left and right). This one on the eBay link has a single switch body with 2 sections (left and right). They also come with just low/off/high round switches. w

August 23, 2018 at 7:22 am #305461Great idea — I ordered one of these Bluetooth amps to add to the center console that I am building for ManyPenny.
My Ford-based TDr seems to have room in front of the shifter for fire extinguisher, cup holder, heated seat switches, and this AMP — I hope. So your post about this little amp is timely.
By the way, thanks Billnparts for suggesting that I add the seat heaters while I was building the seats for this kit…definately the time to do it if I was going to add heated seats…)

August 20, 2018 at 2:07 pm #305454Hey Bill,
You may want to remove that “Race it == Break It == Fix It == Repeat” sticker from the side of your car…. or just keep the part that says “Race It == Repeat” and skip the Break it == Fix it steps………..
As Royal says, — and I paraphrase — “now you have a winter project”
But it drives and no chassis damage — and you know what to do…….
My heart and wallet go out to you…
Happy Jack
(I’m envious — you have stock 52 MGTD headlight brackets…I only got cheap stamped steel ones with my CMC kit…..Bummer….)
August 9, 2018 at 9:00 am #305364Wow Ed,
It looks like you went to the Spaghetti Factory and got a take out order of wiring!! At least our cars are without CPU, ECU, PEU and other stink’in electronic modules to have to sort out….
When do we get to see the finished product? It would be worth an autumn trip up to the VA mountains to get an early look at your creation (earlier than next Carlisle event in May…)
…The paint color is great. Kind of blue, I think??
Keep up those progress reports.

August 8, 2018 at 6:41 am #305357After messing with inaccurate gauges for quite a while, I went with VDO small gauges (much less $$ than Smiths and lots of choices in dial face style) and I wimped out and purchased an inexpensive Speedo & GPS sender and Tach off of eBay ( less than $100 each). The Speedo and Tach are not period correct but they are accurate and easy to read….
Have fun,
Happy Jack
August 8, 2018 at 6:31 am #305356OK Roy, so it’s tongs and not tweezers & it’s knackered and not messed up & it’s sorted out and not worked out…
…and it’s a bonnet and not a hood & it’s packing and not gaskets/”thin rubber thingies.” I’m starting to get it.
I guess that means Ed needs to add some German vocabulary to his daily chats about his fine new Porsche Spyder kit and some Japanese engine verbiage to talk to his German/Japanese/English “Bridget” (er doesn’t the fact that she is named Bridget (ala Bardot) require a little French to be thrown into the mix was well?)
Well enough fun. Today is seat back, carpet, door checks and door panel day…
What Fun!!

August 7, 2018 at 10:49 am #305344Ok Roy, I will simplify — I’ll get rid of the sugar cubes and the sugar cube tweezers and change the label “Diorama” to something more descriptive like “Scene depicting a happy British Motoring Couple having their CUPPA while parked at that special overlook on the Welsh Coast” or maybe even “Time for Tea” or simply leave the scene unnamed and let the observer come up with their own mental description. (i.e. Wobby saying “WOW, an ugly, tasteless, tacky tea pot.”)
“Happy that Ed reminded me of the tea kettle” Jack
August 6, 2018 at 7:08 am #305341Hmm — I forgot about my 12 volt tea kettle —
I need to go find it, the English Bone China cups & saucers, sugar tweezers and drive-in tray so I can put them in the back of Manypenny for my next drive around the block!!

August 5, 2018 at 8:43 pm #305335Hey Bill,
It sounds like the fender bender was REALLY a fender bender!!
As to the wipers, I could talk about the special wiper motor I installed, or I could talk about the neat way I changed the auto park circuit to make them park on the right —
— or I could admit that I did not hook up the auto park feature and I decided to park the wipers out of my line of sight — on the right.
I will have to play with the wiper arm length and the wiper blade length to get them to lie flat — on either side. For some reason I seem to be “Wiper challenged” on all of the cars. I even went so far as to watch the driver’s side wiper fall off of the Bugeye and roll under the car in the middle of traffic last year. It seems that the heavens thought I needed to provide you all with some comic relief while we were at the car show in Va Beach …
