We contributed because you are doing a fantastic job on a topic that is near and dear to all of us. This web site has been a big help to me already and my car isn’t even finished. I’ve even used it to blow off some steam from time to time, please forgive that. We are very grateful that you stepped up and got it done.

Amazing talent, awesome workmanship, and because I really respect that I really hate to say this … but IMHO it’s not really very attractive for all the work that went into it. The woodwork is beautiful, but the shape and enclosing the wheels entirely makes it look like a cross between a bar of soap and a bumper car. And the upholstery d…[Read more]

GeorgeB, I’d say it’s definitely Fiberfab, no doubt about it. It looks almost exactly like mine in several details. Most important, the inside of the “hood” (underneath the gas tank and where the battery is located) is exactly like my Fiberfab. And I mean exactly. My tank was also held down in that place with clamps. The windshield stan…[Read more]

The Vegas Strip??? Heck, I live in Vegas and I totally avoid driving on the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard). It’s just crawling along at 3 mph, smelling fumes, and nothing for the driver to see because you’re too busy trying to avoid rear-ending other vehicles or running over pedestrians. When we go to shows on the Strip, we just duck in from on…[Read more]

I bought 165 series wide whitewalls from Coker to go on my 15 x 4.5 OEM VW rims. IMHO they look great, and certainly no reason to think they look too wide for the rims. I haven’t driven the car much except to-from various mechanics, but so far so good. According to the Tire Calculator (link below), there is only 0.4″ difference in width be…[Read more]

John Simion replied to the topic Not mine, but how about $100k? in the forum Running MGTD Kits Cars for Sale 10 years, 3 months ago
While pricey, this appears to be extremely well crafted and I’d bet the owner spent more than $100K building it. Other than the stacks sticking out the side of the hood, there is nothing about it that isn’t darned attractive to me. I’d give $30K for if I had an extra $30K laying around and an extra garage. Not $100K, though …

Rechroming took three weeks last time, and the body shop wants to finish the car and get it out of their shop, so I decided to take my wife’s advice and let it go. For now will probably “fix”this spot with chrome paint and clearcoat. I know it’s not going to be perfect but maybe it will be good enough that I can forget about it, and maybe it w…[Read more]

FYI my Forever Sharp wheel did come with a horn button and I had the car rewired for it accordingly. I really like Moto-Lita but it is a six week wait to order one from England and then no guarantee that it will fit (although if you have a VW and know how many splines you have, they told me by e-mail that they have the right adapter for it). I…[Read more]

It is a 14″ wheel because I was/am desperate to find room for my 6′-4″ body and 34″ inseam legs! Adapting it to the VW steering column was not a problem because Forever Sharp sells a VW adapter. They also sell various extensions. Their website isn’t that clear so I bought an extension but didn’t need or use it. One thing I like about their…[Read more]

The Forever Sharp wheel shown in the eBay link in Paul’s message is also available with a wood rim that has a mahogany finish … I know because I have such a wheel. I posted a photo of my dash with that wheel in another thread. If you have a metal VW turn signal stalk, you can heat it, bend it, and repaint it to avoid the knuckle…[Read more]

John Simion replied to the topic defroster in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years, 4 months ago
The builder of my VW-based car had tried to mate a hair-dryer hose to the VW heater hoses from the engine and thence to the defroster unit. When I got it, the defroster motor would run but I couldn’t tell any heat at all was coming out … and he didn’t install side curtains, either. I had to wonder, “What was he thinking?” Heck, I had a st…[Read more]

John Simion replied to the topic Narrowed Front Beam in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years, 4 months ago
I had it done to my car, had the car lowered, and put on the narrowest 15″ tires sold by Coker on my 4-1/2″ VW wheels. The narrower beam I installed narrows the car by 2″ (i.e., 1″ on each side). The mechanic who installed it told me that nothing more narrow was available. Either the narrower beam or the lowering (or both?) resulted in some mi…[Read more]

Even if you don’t like the style, you have to respect the tremendous amount of work and creativity that went into it. That is a lot of custom fiberglass.

Speaking of the cast aluminum brackets being options … maybe so. When I took the original seats out of my car, I found the original receipt for the cashier’s check to pay for for the kit. The original purchaser paid $4895 to Fiberfab International on August 3, 1983. That’s TRIPLE the “Deluxe” kit price from 1975. Either there were a lot of…[Read more]

Royal, the last part isn’t necessarily true. My TDr came with the heavy duty aluminum brackets similar to a real TD, but my car is marked “Fiberfab” and I have the original purchase receipt from 1983 showing payment to “Fiberfab International.” My car also doesn’t have the other characteristics of a Daytona that you mentioned. Maybe the cast al…[Read more]

It’s about Americans who are nostalgic about Japanese cars (the pictures are all Japanese cars and all the events are in America). Maybe I’m dense, but I don’t “get” the connection to this thread.

This is my first attempt to load a photo. It apparently will allow me to post the photo but for some reason it is turning it upside down. I even tried turning the original upside down and reposting so if the forum software is making the original upside down it would correct itself — but no luck, it really wants this photo to be upside down. …[Read more]

I put a GPS speedometer in my new dash. Got it from Speedhut. Just needs to be wired in and the antenna has a magnet that attaches nicely to the steering column. Fiberglass does not hinder the signal. Since I’ve only driven the car a couple of miles from one shop to another, about all I can say so far is that the speedometer seems to work wel…[Read more]
