John Simion replied to the topic insurance in the forum VW Parts Wanted 9 years, 12 months ago
“American Collectors Insurance” (ACI) is a partner with USAA. They were more than happy to insure my TDR for $30K (!) at a price less than USAA is currently charging me for ??? value while my car is still being finished in my garage. Since the car is still not on the road, I haven’t signed on with anybody, but I do plan to get quotes from H…[Read more]

“motorcycle does suffer because of the little car” — heck, my wife made me give up our motorcycle because she was scared out of her wits while riding on it. And, as much as I loved riding the motorcycle, I really couldn’t blame her. The problem was not my riding ability, it was the other drivers who don’t pay attention. On the rare oc…[Read more]

It would be easy enough to build triangular braces for the inside edge of each half, and making it a permanent setting would be easy, but making the triangle braces easily adjustable would be a challenge.

John Simion replied to the topic Water Problem in the forum General Discussion 9 years, 12 months ago
My FF car is always garaged, so I don’t have your problem, but I don’t think it would be the hood strip letting water in. Even if water made its way through, there’s no way it could make it down to the floorpans inside my car … admittedly, yours may be different.
I think I’d focus on the car cover. Some car covers are not entirely waterproof. … -

Let’s see here. Completely restored, except for paint and upholstery, missing taillight, missing rear view mirror, passenger turn signal falling off. Engine obviously redone professionally, as evidenced by the missing air filter and the teeth on the belt facing outwards. New pans, and built-up/fortified frame — not shown. New carpet — not…[Read more]

If you use Windows, you can open your pictures in MS Paint and resize them that way and save them (I use a different name so I can keep the larger original). MS Paint is automatically included with every version of Windows, so no need to buy anything. The only problem with Paint is that you have to right-click on the picture file you want and s…[Read more]

I like that floor pan stiffener but it looks about impossible to install to my car, now that it is nearly complete.

Thanks for the clarification, Edsnova. After re-reading, I crawled under the car and looked around and think I’ve got it … particularly when I found this diagram. The diagram makes more clear to boneheaded me as to why (2) and (3) wouldn’t bend the pan. Dunno if I want to take any chances with the regular jack points, however. Looks like I n… -

Confusion on my part reigns supreme. Sorry for my ignorance, but could I get some clarification?
Schu said, “if you use the rear torsion bars to jack the rear and the front beam for the front you will have no issues.” I am embarrassed to say that I really can’t identify what are the torsion bars, or where on the torsion bars I would jack. And th… -

“Beware of taking too big of a bite of the project at once.” I’ll second that, but it’s easier said than done. If you are a perfectionist, I have one piece of advice: Get another vehicle. I bought my car off eBay because I thought it was “cheap” even though I wasn’t sure whether I’d fit in it. I didn’t, but I thought it would be a simple matt…[Read more]

Toller, my gauges are from Speedhut. One example is the speedometer, which I’ve linked here:
I obviously customized this and all the other gauges in the same manner. It takes a 4-1/2″ hole saw (which I’ll sell really cheap if you need one!)to cut the dash for the speedo an… -
John Simion replied to the topic what oil to use in the forum General Discussion 10 years ago
My car is equipped with an aftermarket oil filter. Also, I’m in Las Vegas. The car is garaged and has no heater, so it won’t be driven much in temperatures below 50. Nor would I anticipate torturing myself by going out when it’s much over 90, let alone when it’s 115. Would any of this make any difference in the recommended oil, or in the oil…[Read more]

John Simion replied to the topic Replica For Sale — Summary in the forum General Discussion 10 years ago
Well, I’m going to disagree with Paul. This isn’t true for all, but a properly built TDR can be extremely “original looking.” And define “rudimentary car knowledge.” About 98% of the public doesn’t even know what an MG TD is, let alone the difference between an original and a replica. The DMV has my car titled as a “1952 MG TD” and I’ll bet…[Read more]

Ed’s photos demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship that I could never emulate in a million years — yet the photos omitted what I consider to be critical in making a new dash … getting the shape and the holes in exactly the right spot. My old FF dash was “close” to the outline of the cowl, but not quite right. Also, I thought the FF dash was n…[Read more]

Taking it even farther off-topic, I once had Ray’s idea to convert all my old vinyl albums into mp3s. I would like to attempt to dissuade Ray from this idea much as I was dissuaded from that notion. My kids pointed out that converting all my albums into mp3s at 3 minutes per song would have required a huge amount of uninterrupted time — time t…[Read more]

Smart design and cool workmanship. The only question I would wonder is whether it is just for looks or would it actually hold stuff? Copper pipe is pretty soft.

Greg, you probably already know this but maybe not … please don’t be offended but just in case you don’t know, you don’t need a music store to download songs. John Simion replied to the topic Review of RetroSound in the forum General Discussion 10 years ago
I used the RetroSound enclosures so the speakers could be mounted on the surface. I had some concern about structural integrity of the car in making two six-inch holes in the back of the package shelf — but mainly I didn’t know how to seal the back sides (I didn’t know about the Boom Mats). In 20-20 hindsight, regular speakers with Boom Mats…[Read more]
