    @juneybug

just mounted the roof rib mounting plate and tucked lead edge into windshield frame. Vinyl is about 5″ from body.

Even with Ferrari rake on the windshield. my plan is to lower the mounting plates.

I cut 1 and 3/4 inches  out of the column extender and raised the column to the bottom of the dash. seems comfortable enough. 5’11” 210 lbs. have the seat back just below the shelf.

    I
am exactly at this stage of building a never started kit. I cut the column extender to get the steering wheel out of my belly. I thought the kink in the disk was the result of taking out a little too much. added some washers and reduced some of the distortion. I have convinced myself that the disk was designed into the car because steel on steel does not flex.
In a rare insight the kit designers included a disk top and bottom to allow for flex.juneybug2016-01-18 12:22:51

Car still not on the road. what holds it is a screw into the inner tub wall. I stripped it trying to be sure I could get it tight enough to withstand the vibrations I’m expecting. I have seats and back and steering wheel in as comfortable a driving position as I think is possible given that my total experience is in the garage. . Good to know you don’t change your seat back angle. and thanks very much for the quick reply

took an inch and a half out of steering column extension, to get the steering wheel off my belly.  I have stripped the thread out of the knob for the seat back adjuster. As I rarely adjust the seat in my new car Don’t know if I want to go to the trouble of a fix. Does anybody use the seat back adjustment?

My seat base issue is the rearward angle. I did remake the bases from wood to the same measurements and angle as the original fiberglass bases with the modification described by schu. I find that I am pitched backward and intend to raise the back of the base 1 or 2″  to flatten the surface. Haven’t got windshield or roof in but expect to be O K. The N I B foam I have is very thick and soft. I feel like denser material would have been better. Has anybody else altered the angle of the seat bottom with happy result?

here’s some rare advice – listen to your wife. More realistically soon you will make another inconsequential mistake and the upside is you’ll forget this onejuneybug2015-08-20 14:41:55

steering column mounting –  the angle iron support structure and flimsy firewall gives me concern. Any advice on this part of the process. absent better a plan I’m thinking of a plywood gusset to strengthen the support of something this important

I have just finished removing all but 4 large leaves from
upper and lower torsion tubes.  I was
able to do it from 1 side, (driver???s because of how it sits in garage) and
without removing the hub.  You will need
a platform to rest the hub on, and to disconnect the shock at the bottom. I
also disconnected the upper trailing arm from the hub to pull it out but the
lower arm came out while still attached.  Mine had the expected 4 large leaves and 6
small in the bottom tube but 4 large 2 small and 2 as wide as large but not as
thick, seemed to occupy the same volume. In the samba.com there is a reference
in the kit car forum to welding pieces of the removed leaves at the ends and
center so the grub screws fit into the same volume. I didn???t and hope/think it
doesn???t matter. If possible pull out the excess leaves while disturbing the 4
large as little as possible. Reinserting them was more difficult than expected.
A very important learning experience to
pass on is: don???t start pulling leaves with the center grub screw out because
the collar it goes into is not fixed in place. I had to wiggle it back and
replace screw but it must be loose as well as the grub screw on the opposite
side to pull leaves out. I may have disturbed my camber as I noticed score
lines that don???t line up anymore but that???s another day.  Hope this helps.

Very well done Ed! Regretfully I will continue to ignore it. As long as we continue to elect politicians dedicated to the elimination of the middle class it just feels like another swing and a miss. My wife and I were at Carlisle this spring and are leaving for Phoenix Monday. We are almost always pleased to meet Americans individually. But somehow the media have turned you into a bunch of tea party supporters dedicated to making sure the rich get richer. With apologies for the generalizations.

I thought I was overspending because I wanted to build vs buy. I have an idea this company will soon follow FF CMC London etc. to an early Chapter 11.

hope so couple of months behind Allen. And having same issues, can’t visualize the fiberglass chrome grill coming together. Words and visuals in manual useful but well lit photo would help

Would whoever gets these please make a plaster of paris mold of both sides or whatever copy material you can work with and preserve it till some one who knows of a home foundry can get a quote. I would volunteer but freight across the border is prohibitive.

Hi Bill I think we are in about the same stage of assembly of an unbuilt FF kit. The scribe line thing seemed a huge problem but a recent posting from STG-inc of a very hi quality assembly and some advice here and in Carlisle PA. puts things in a little perspective. Somehow Edsnova noticed the hood sidepanels were long and STG-inc explained the stretching process. Secondly it seems nothing really fits, you grind, fill, trim and accommodate to a point you can live with. Some of these have been built by NASA engineers some are in a permanent dogleg left. They’re all fun. “After Dinner cars” best description I’ve heard. Mike

if you save a search for replica convertibles – best way to limit the field then look at Left side of “for sale” page click completed listing page. scroll for green numbers to get sold items, a lot fall thru anyway, not sure how long they stay a week or 10 days you won’t miss much
just checked last 3 tdr’s did not sell.

Would appreciate it thanks George. Send to schu49@gmail.com won’t be wiring for a bit but progress is being made. keep tweaking assembly but there is going to be patch and fill. Just bought this AM some hi density foam for between the seat box and pan.

It is very nice to see another generation interested in cars that can be repaired without computer connections.

Another site that is very useful for Volkswagen issues is thesamba.com.

Best wishes and do encourage your best video/photographer to keep a careful record of your progress, who knows you might resurrect the industry.

eds nova 2 posts up refers to this as unmatched fun per $ and the rest of us agree totally.
