I agree that the sheet-foam design is very promising in terms of using amateur-friendly material. Insulation capability is also a big plus. Well done indeed.
What is the outer covering? In the brown photo it looks like canvas but in the finished photos I can’t tell.

I drove through Fargo last year and took a few photos of the former CRL building. Presently there is one remaining in my media gallery. The building was for sale and had only a minor tenant.

Since we are on this topic and stirring the creative pot – if some clever person could create a hardtop with integrated side windows, perhaps a gull-wing configuration, they would have something both practical and cool. I’m thinking along the lines of some of the aftermarket tops available for Jeeps and the like.

Sometimes a bit of “history” can make understanding our troubles a bit easier, I hope.
Until the 70’s a good brake job included “shaping” the new shoes to match the drums. This was done on a sanding fixture which removed high spots so the shoes would have full contact immediately rather than having to break in. Unfortunately this process r…[Read more]

FYI. I have a small, home handyman drillpress which is very handy and usefull for many things, including sanding.
But, if you are thinking of buying one especially for the dash project check a dimension called “throat depth”. ( 😈 Pause while the snickering quiets down) The throat depth determines the maxium distance from the edge of y…[Read more]

Crazy idea. What about coating the dash with black Plasti-Dip to simulate vinyl? 🙄

Rich Kallenberger replied to the topic Fuel Tank Vent Line in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 5 months ago
For what it’s worth:
I have uploaded three pics of my “final version” fuel tank vent to my media file – kall, media, photos.
I tapped a 1/8″ brass ell into the highest point of the tank. A vent hose goes to a motorcycle type one way vent (air in as fuel is used) and also to a hose which runs under the frame to the rear of the car. The gas fi…[Read more]

Seems like switching the hinge side of the hood might be an option if you want a certain tank.

Rich Kallenberger replied to the topic Dying on Idle in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 5 months ago
After I first acquired my TDr it took two carb dissemblies and cleanings to fix the “stalling at idle” problem. Having no experience I overlooked several of those tiny holes in hard to see places in the carb. It is also necessary to get the tank and fuel lines cleaned or replaced first. Works great now.

Would you support the idea of entering the topic name in the tag box to facilitate searches or is that redundant?

Could someone please explain the “topic tags” box? I suspect that it has to do with the effectiveness of the search function and so we should be using it. Maybe just re-enter the topic title in that box?

Regarding the vented cap – I started out with a vented cap but got complaints from passengers about gas smell. Since the evap system from my engine was long gone I ended up switching to a non-vented cap, adding a vent at the highest part of the fuel tank and routing it under the chassis to the rear of the car.

Pardon me for stating the “obvious” but the fuel tank filler and the open side of the hood should match.
