If you’re running an electronic distributor or a points replacement module, it is likely fried.

I think they must’ve meant the back seats. The front seats are far too wide.

If you’re willing to spend the $$, the Rebel Wire harnesses for VW are the nicest ones out there. Modern spade-type fuse block with built in flasher and socket, made in the USA, plus high-quality color coded wires, already separated and bundled, that also have a label/circuit name stamped on them every 6-12″ inches. Not nearly as cheap as the…[Read more]

A very slight twist to the right is normal. Something like 1/4″ or so, at the right cylinder head tin. You typically won’t even notice it unless you’re at the rear of the car revving the engine then letting off it. Anything really noticeable means your motor mounts are likely worm out and need replaced. They are rubber with metal plates moulded…[Read more]

In support of Roy, the rare Allison TDr is known for having the thickest, strongest fiberglass, while the BCW likely is most authentic, using the most reproduction TD parts such as folding windshields. This from a guy who owns the “low price leader” Fiberfab that came without a chrome grill shell, repro headlight mounts, etc. Please don’t try to go…[Read more]

Ditto Ed’s input. The pressure plate and throwout bearing must match. The sleeve is required for the later style pressure plate, and is not required for the older style with three fingers and a collar.KentT2016-03-17 22:15:01

Similarly, the Carter low-pressure pump I linked does not require a separate pressure regulator. It is internally regulated not to exceed 4 psi. A stock mechanical VW pump can produce up to 7.5 psi at high RPMs (with a mechanical pump, pressure is proportional to engine RPM), and the stock carbs handled it fine, though the 28 PICTs and the later…[Read more]

The Bosch relay I described does the same thing, using only one relay, by monitoring the tach signal from the coil. It only pumps when the engine is running.

Mine are still sitting in an unopened box… I don’t think it’s the Empi kit, but I honestly don’t remember. Are people doing the disk conversion without a residual pressure valve? I’ve seen that adding one is sometimes necessary, especially on American cars. Seen little discussion on VW conversions…This week has been consumed by other higher…[Read more]

I agree Paul, that it is all in what someone is willing to pay, or accept…Again, based on my experience a couple years ago, eBay sales (not listings) are the best indicator of current market value. Then, if a weekend’s work would get it on the road, it was valued at about $3k. If you could immediately start driving and enjoying it, without…[Read more]

Ed,I’ve noticed that you seem to make very low ball efforts of value – no offense meant – but based on my shopping experience a couple years ago, $1000 is about what a VW-based TDr that’s been setting outside until the pan rotted away. This one, in dry storage, seems to be a barn find and likely would bring $1500 to $2000 on eBay. But, $300 might…[Read more]

Carter Low Pressure PumpToo soon to provide much feedback…EDIT: Should you choose to use an electric pump, here’s some good reading on installing and wiring it. Though it’s a VW site, the wiring is the same in principle. For safety reasons, I used the suggested Bosch relay that shuts the pump off…[Read more]

First trial fit of a frame stiffener, as I try to get everything ready to start the POR 15 cleaning and prepping process. I want to coat the stiffeners before installing them, then topcoat once installed.First, a bottom view of the front of a stiffener. They are 1″ x 3″ tubing preshaped and predrilled. The two holes on the left are for bolting…[Read more]

Oh, I’ve repaired far worse rot, but was typically limited to the battery area.If this were a Bug, it would be far easier to repair. But since the narrower TDr front, from about the front of the door opening, sits inboard of the original mounting flanges, piecing in large sections of pan is not a good option. The remaining metal is so thin in…[Read more]

KentT replied to the topic Phoenix… my revival project in the forum My Project 9 years, 6 months ago
No offense Paul. The reason I said I may have to buy more POR 15 is because having discovered more holes, I will be using more fiberglass cloth than originally thought, encapsulating it in POR 15 rather than typical fiberglass resin. That will require far more POR 15 than simply applying a protective coating. The repair kit came with only two pints…[Read more]
