Great craftsmanship, and ingenious solutions! Well done!

Use 15-18 PSI in the front, and 24-26 in the rear. May take a bit of experimenting on your part.

Kent, please tell me about your oil filter.  I’ve been considering one.

It’s a CB Performance Maxi II, 26mm oil pump with spin-on filter.https://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1791Be careful of the cheap Empi and other aftermarket filter pumps. Some are 30mm, and many/most have sloppy gear mesh. This is a q…[Read more]

I’ve been taking advantage of the unseasonably nice weather to move stuff out of the sheds into the new garage, adding a few of the decorations I’ve collected over the years. Most importantly, the new engine is about 50 yards closer to being in… 🙂 Hope to finish the unpacking and putting things away in the next few days, and back to wrenching…[Read more]

  • BTW, this discussion of the shift plate reminded me of these quick shift kits for the stock VW shifter;Quick Shift Kit on AmazonIf you are using a stock VW shifter, these inexpensive things make a huge difference, reducing the distance the shifter must be moved by 40%. They do not work with most aftermarket shifters, which have something similar…[Read more]

Also, I wonder how much the side panels add to the structural strength of the overall car body. Removing them may compromise the integrity. I always thought car companies simply cut the top off of a car to make a convertible, until I talked to car designer and was told, unless planned as a convertible from the start, there had…

I second Paul’s suggestion. There’s likely a screw on the bottom, perhaps hidden by the mounting bracket. That’s how mine come apart. You have to remove it from the mounting bracket before you can remove the screw.KentT2016-01-27 12:57:03

If that’s running two single contact bulbs, change the pigtail in the socket behind “Stop” to a dual contact.

Agree. Tring to use a jumper as originally mentioned ould backfeed the entire other circuit. If the brake light is not bright enough to satisfy you, try using a brighter bulb/LED array.

  • If you go dual carbs you won’t regret it. They’ll make a noticeable difference from the Bug Spray, and a huge difference from stock. It will idle smoother and slower, and accelerate much quicker.Hows the new Pertronix working well for you?KentT2016-01-20 17:51:37

  • Hope the Pertronix works for you. Suggest you check its advance also. Since German Bosch distributors are NLA, this is far too common a problem…

Wish I had the option of natural gas, both for the house and garage. A big disadvantage of my more rural setting – that, and lack of cable TV/internet.

It would likely be a better potential investment, since a TDr at best holds its value. It doesn’t and likely never will appreciate in value, while a real TD does. My concern with it is the suspension and brakes, assuming the wood is solid. Your TDr likely handles, rides and stops much better. Not sure how much you drive your TDr, but that may be…[Read more]

Must admit I’m a bit jealous. I have a 2hp, 30 gallon horizontal and it won’t keep up with my pad sander. Handles air tools and such OK – even painted a 64 Beetle with it- but it is certainly limited. I’ve drooled over big verticals, but haven’t pulled the trigger. There just have always been higher priorities, since this 30+ year old one still works…

BTW, if you find the bolts holding the steering box lid are loose – be sure to back that adjustment screw WAY back out before you tighten the lid/cover back down. Then, once the cover is tight, readjust the set screw..

  • KentT replied to the topic bad steering in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years ago

The flexible coupler is simply to accommodate minor alignment differences be5ween the steering box and the steering shaft. If you can move the steering wheel without the steering shaft moving at that coupler, the problem is likely the splines on the top end of the steering shaft where the steering wheel coonects, often using an adapter. The splines…[Read more]

  • KentT replied to the topic Neutral Safety Switch in the forum General Discussion 10 years ago

To my knowledge, no standard 4 speed Bug had a neutral safety switch. The Autostick may have had one as part of the electric clutch servo wiring, but it has been too long since I was around one, that I can’t recall.KentT2016-01-15 11:33:00

  • That hump is likely just shaped foam rubber and you could pull the upholstery snug on the back board at the top and bottom – but I won’t/can’t guarantee that, since I’ve never even tried to install them. They came with a FiberFab kit, I think.
