Rob. Thanks for the Joanne Fabrics lead. There is one on the way home from work. Tomorrow is my last day. Then when the wife retires I’m looking at heading home to New England.

Schu. I have seen your pictures and I’m trying to find the straps. I’ll try a local upholstery shop
and let everyone know how it went. And post pictures when complete. -

Here’s the link that shows the local MGTDr (VW based) that made me decide on the TD that Ed suggested rather than the Mercedes Gazelle.newkitman2015-10-10 20:51:56

Instead of the shelf support bracket I stuck with the washer, lock-washer and nut system. I don’t use a strap for my hood. I use the metal rod as the Fiberfab option suggests. Might add a small piece of strap in case the wind tries to blow it open off the rod.

Paul. My guess is your hood strip came with the kit. I bought mine from MG Magic and doesn’t have the strip on the underside. The studs are secured in a channel of the hood strip and they have fiber washer nuts (self-locking nuts). These cause the tabs of the stud to twist in the hood strip channel and want to pull out. I will change to the…[Read more]

I believe it pushes fresh air through the charcoal canister and then exits it back into the air cleaner.

Roy. A hose connects that tube to either the air cleaner housing or the emission canister. Part of the ole smog system.

I have a bus seal but have a question as to the fit of the rear valance and engine tin. With the engine installed, does the top of the valence align with the engine tins? I see a lot of photos with the top of the valance being well below the engine tin. I know there are alignment issues to deal with as the engine cover has to sit against the body…[Read more]

newkitman replied to the topic engine bay bad fuel filter cheap or ? in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years, 1 month ago
I agree with Kent. Locally they are referred to as engine fire starters. Putting a cheap plastic filter in a hot area without clamps and right next to a source of ignition (that there coil thingy :0) ) is never a good idea. Especially when it is the only fuel line under any kind of pressure. Mine. a metal one, is located up front on the side… -

The battery box is a fiberglass tub that fits down into a cutout just in front of the gas tank cutout.

A type 3 engine case (VW squareback, notchback, fastback) has the engine serial number stamped on the split-line of the case along the top. Its hidden under the engine tin. When you use a type 3 engine case and type 1 cooling tins then you see the engine number. Could be one of those.

GeorgeB,Check the download manuals tab on the left then select Fiberfab. You can download the assembly manual and that will help with the steering, speedometer cable, battery and gas tank issues. Actually, being you have a Fiberfab kit it’ll help across the board. -

I’ve driven on the Mass, Vermont, Conn, Mississippi (because I can spell it lol) and Wisc scenic routes. Also have done the Tail of the Dragon in Tenn. All fun rides. And you are correct. These are going to be added to my bucket list. -

Although I never used them in my rebuilt Karmann Ghia, I have seen a couple of Ghias with them but never a Beetle or TDr. There is some potential benefit but I’m not engineer savey enough to figure it all out. I wouldn’t think it would impact side-to-side flex all that much. Our TDrs are pretty solid front to back. My .02… -
