No Rich…the quarter elliptical springs work fine once you find the right rate.
I was asking Rob Baker if he thought of using those coil over “helper” shocks before replacing the springs. Monroe used to call them “Load Levelers”.
To put a coil over set up in these cars requires the fabrication of a 4 link rear suspension. Depending on the…[Read more] -

Aren’t your car’s springs quarter elliptical? If so, then these need to be cut as they are semi-elliptical.
I had Eaton-Detroit Spring make a set of quarter elliptical springs for the Ford based CMC kit I built. Just cutting the stock springs ended up riding like a brick. The springs they made me allowed for leaf removal. I ended up with the main…[Read more] -

You could contact Street Beasts (formerly CMC). I doubt if they would know though.
Other than that it’s been nearly 25 years since these cars were manufactured. These CMC cars are “chopper gun” fiberglass and who the heck knows what Gel Coat they used.
Maybe a marine fiberglass repair outfit could help? Most good boatworks can steer you in the…[Read more] -

If you know the diameter of your tires and have a working Tachometer, you can determine your speed in any gear.
I built an Excel spreadsheet table that I can send to you. Just change the tire diameter and final gear ratio (in any gear) and it’ll automatically change the table to tell you the actual speed at a given RPM.
Otherwise…drive at the…[Read more] -

I was so tired of getting hit in the head with my VW based TD’s engine cover that I removed the hinge and installed hatch cover latches from the marine suppy.
I think you can see them in my gallery.
Even if you install the gas struts, the hinge needs to stay. They only assist in the lift and hold the hood open.

Great pics…you can even see my Suburban’s tranny fluid all over the front of my trailer!
How did you get them to post?

It should “wiggle” right off. The crank is keyed, but not tapered. Tap not pound) on the pulley OD with a rubber hammer and it should come right off…that is as long as the nut is removed!

The best thing to do is find a Ford based CMC kit and go look at it. Maybe someone has pictures if their build.
In 2001, I bought a complete, un-built CMC/Ford TD. I had tons of pictures of every square inch of the bare frame to rolling chassis build. Unfortunatley, they were “electronic” and after selling the car to the California buyer and…[Read more] -

We need to know if it’s cable or electronic and if it’s VW or Chevette driveline.
I hope it’s not what happened to my former Pink MG…The drive gear (worm gear) on the transmission tail shaft disintegrated. This is common and happens because it’s nylon and when it sits in gear oil for a long time, the nylon swells…really swells.
So, at some…[Read more] -

Larry,
You’ve been a busy man! The picutres look greatThat new chrome really shines! It should purr like a kitten!
It’s hard to see in the picture, but I think you used the straight water outlet (Stat housing) that I got from a Chevette Forum member in Canada. That was one hard part to find. The original aimed the outlet at the master…[Read more] -

I was so burned out over the Suburban’s transmission debacle (no pun intended) that I didn’t take any pictures with my camera. Larry’s grandson took several of the off-loading process in Larry’s driveway on Mother’s Day though. Maybe he can post them?

BCW never made 500 cars in total. They were only in business a few years, 1980-85
The Schweppe’s Giveaway cars were built from a fleet purchase of Chevette Scooters for donors. Although one was supposed to be given away in all 50 states and 50 cars were supposedly produced, my information was that less than 50 were actually built. Some remote…[Read more] -

Sounds like the clutch cable may need to be adjusted. Where does the clutch grab in first gear?
Or after the trans is warmed up from a nice drive, drain and refill it with a quality synthetic gear lube like Royal Purple. If it sat for years, it may have a synchro or slider hanging up. -

OK guys…I’ll post another thread with the whole 2 weekends long story or saga as it turned out.
In the mean time the Pink MG is now residing in Reidsville, NC at the home of “Murph” the Bassett Hound.

Offset is how far (+ or -) from the center of the wheel the bolt surface is. I think your are referring to Backspace.
Check out the wheels on the Pink MG. These are Chevette pattern (4 x 100mm) wheels with the correct backspace. I bought them from U.S. Wheel in 2005. They are Series 97 wheel, 14 x 6.
There are also shops that can make any 4 x 100…[Read more] -

The finned, cast cover on the oil pump is NOT an indication of full flow oiling. There is a “plugged” boss area adjacent to that cover that needs to be drilled and tapped for a hose fitting. Some blocks have a small freeze plug there. If you don’t have that port drilled tapped and an oil line hooked to it, it’s not full flow. A remote filter p…[Read more]
