The part the goes into the master cylinder should be the original VW part. Not sure what to call it. But it should be screwed into the front of the steel rod.
There should be almost no play at all.
The proper adjustment was to fit the rod into the master cylinder and attach it the the brake pedal. Then “unthread” the part that fits through the…[Read more] -

To heck with flying. I’ll drive the MG.
And yes…drive. Even tho I bagged it for Carlisle this year…my TD has been driven from NJ to Indianapolis and to Cincinnatti. In the early nineties a national club called the Specially Constructed Vehicle Association was formed. It lasted about three years. They did two national shows, the first in Cinn.…[Read more] -

Who;s kit do you have?
I know how Classic Roadsters handled this.
Classic Roadsters left the master cylinder in it’s stock location and provided a steel pipe to run between the brake pedal and the master cylinder. Once you relocate the pedals, you cut the pipe to he necessary length, tapped both ends and screwed the VW parts into the pipe. As they…[Read more] -

Yup. Splurge on new chrome VW caps, OK?
Find the center and drill a hole. I forget the measurement, but it’s greater than a half inch. That’ll be easy to figure out once you have the parts.
The centers are held on with a cotter pin. You’ll have to put some layers of vinyl or other material between the back of the hubcap and the cotter pin to make…[Read more] -

Quick report (albeit late) on th Carlise ImMport/Kit Car show.
First and most important, amidst a sea of Speedster reproductions sat Dale’s beautiful MG TD replica. Nice car Dale! And I believe the only TD repro on the field. Next we really have to get a bunch of us there.
I gave in to my other interest and drove out in one of my Volvos. Volvo was…[Read more] -

Re the mirrors…outside, I only have the two fender mirrors. Both sides (driver and passenger) have convex lenses. Once you are used to them, you actually get a pretty good view. MG Magic wil probaly haev them. TD parts suppliers like Moss have them also. And I think even JC Whitney has them.
My inside rearview mirror is the type used on most…[Read more] -

Thanks Paul.
I may have picked up some TD-kit info over the years (my car’s been on the road since 1983!), and maybe even some VW know-how. But I don’t have the web-knowledge necessary to maintain the actual site. -

Wheelcovers: Original or reproduction TD caps will not fit the VW wheel. I came close (not exact but close) with chrome VW hubcaps, which I drilled to fit the MD wheel centers. You can see them on my car in the photo gallery, PMOSSBERG folder

I meant to add….
Post a couple pictures of the car. I’m sure club members will be able to identify it.
Is there an id plate…either near the windshield base or on the firewall? -

Hamish,
It’s not just measurements that differ between kits and original TD roofs.
There are many other significant differences between original tops and most (if not all) reproductions.
For starters, original side curtains are metal framed, with sliding hard plastic windows. I’ve never seen a true reproduction on a kit. The kit side curtains are…[Read more] -

Hello Hamish,
The tops on Topsonline are reproductions of tops for original MG-TDs. I beleive they will not work on your friend’s TD replica.
You might try MG Magic in Florida, phone 954-680-2010.
She might also try to have a top sewn locally. Any place that makes boat tops could probably handle the job. Some auto convertible top installers or…[Read more] -

Hi,
The Carlisle event is put on by Carlisle Productions,a family run firm that puts on about 12 or so major car shows each year. Among them are shows focused on GM, Chrysler, Ford, motorcycles, Import/Kit/Replicars, corvette…much more detail on their web site.
So…no, this event does not “travel”. It’s always in Carlisle. -
