Awesome slide show, Bill. Thanks for that!
I blogged the journey on the Spyder build site: https://alongcameaspyder.wordpress.com/2023/10/11/air-auto-classic-11/

Well another Virginia Beach event is in the books. Beautiful weather for the ride down and back with Saturday producing some spitting during the show, but the ride to and from the show were dry. We had a modern day tent revival on the beach by the hotel Friday and Saturday night. This is my photo dump.

HA! Did not realize you changed out your R&P. Fun.
I finished installing new control arm bushings in Bridget a couple weeks ago, then she wouldn’t start. Chased electrical gremlins all week and she finally fired right up, then would not go into gear! So I bought a new clutch cable, and also welded the cable tube more firmly into inside of the…[Read more]

Still on schedule. Racing’s over. The cage is off and the seat is out. The windshield is back on. I just finished swapping the 4:11’s for the 3:40’s. A couple more little things to address yet, but we should be ready. Can’t wait.

Ed and Bill and anyone else coming still in for the show?
Hopefully weather is good because I’m out the following week ( vacation in Texas ).
Looking forward to it.

Most VW air cooled engines leak a bit of oil. If you rev them up. especially with bigger cylinders fitted or stroked cranks, they tend to blow a little oil through the front behind the crank pulley. There’s no seal there from the factory, just a screw groove spinning to carry the oil back toward the crank case. 5000 RPM overwhelms it. Leaks at the…[Read more]

Could be good. Note the engine tin goes to the edges of the engine bay. That’s how it should be to keep the motor cool when you’re rolling slow. A dual-carb 1776 should be peppy, I recommend a test drive—and see how recently that motor was installed. Google GEX engines & check reviews on the Samba.

I think that’s a better bet to enjoy a country drive. It’s very pretty, but I know nothing concerning the VW based TD’s.

Looks like a better bet. I see a bit of rust on the pan in one of the usual spots. If the engine is right, maybe offer a bit more than half the asking price to start…

Counterpoint: Run (do not walk) as far away as possible.
- We do not see the chassis. It was made by a guy is all we know. He let it go. Did he know how to build chassis? How to weld? Unknown. The time for driving a bed frame with 400 horsepower on public roads is past.
- The headers are amazing in that they’re routed away from the starter.…

It looks like a fun piece. Lots of cosmetic things to address, but that’s minor. The framework looks solid besides looking like I welded it. As long as the welds hold it doesn’t matter what they look like. A road test would be necessary to see how/if it flexes under all that power. The 9″ out back with the 4 wheel disc brakes is a good addition. I…[Read more]

September 16-17. Weatherly, PA. Fall Weatherly Hillclimb. First ran in 1960. The entire town gets behind this event. It’s a great venue. Only 1 mile in length, but Turn 3 is named “the Wall”. The inside of this right hander is almost vertical. Trucks and busses have been known to get stuck there. Turn 5 is “the Jump”. Exiting the turn is a blind…[Read more]

edward ericson replied to the topic What do you think is the best VW replica in the forum MGTD Kit Cars 1 year, 12 months ago
TD replica on a Bug pan is fun to autoX but not very effective because the rear weight bias is so substantial. It’s about 65-35, so getting the front wheels to bite is tough. Loads of laughs though: highly recommend.
The various “brands” of this kit—CMC, Fiberfab MiGi, Allison, Grand Duchess, BCW, etc.—are all functionally the same, with one cav…[Read more]

All the VW based replicas share the same basic platform. You’d simply be autocrossing a rebodied VW. Anybody out there think that’s not true? I think it would just be picking a TD with the engine of your choice. There are TD’s out there with a Scooby swap. Hope you find what you need.

I have a post with pictures that Paul helped me post years ago that had a ” how to fix ” a seat and make it comfortable. I can ride for hours now. I’m not real good finding stuff on this site but maybe you can locate. Frozen or Dead butt syndrome or something like that. It really worked for me. It should be under my postings or Paul my have posted for me.
