Hi guys. I’m a newbie here and was wondering if there are still manufacturers out there producing VW based MGTD’s? I have been all over the internet but can’t seem to find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
April 10, 2009 at 11:26 am #238627Hi Tom…welcome.
Unfortunately, it’s been almost 20 years since the last MG-TD replica’s were manufactured. At their height in the 1980’s there was many different manufacturers of the TD replica. FiberFab, Classic Roadsters Ltd, British Coach Work, Allison, and Classic Motor Carriages (FiberFab after the owner’s jailing), Daytona MIGI and others.
There were also companies that took some these cars, built them and sold them as turn-key cars under their own moniker.
Believe it or not, there are still unbuilt kits out there. I’ll be most are incomplete, but they are out there.
There is a company in New Zealand that produces an MG-TF “variant” (last of the “T” series). It uses an early Mazda Miata donor. It is a “pallet car” arriving built (strapped to a pallet) sans, the drivetrain, suspension, steering column, gas tank and wiring which come from the Miata donor. It’s expensive at close to $20,000 delivered. It is very high quality though.
Are you interested in finding an unbuilt kit or an unfinished car?
April 10, 2009 at 1:18 pm #238628Actually I would like to find a finished car I could afford. Also would be interested in an unfinished kit as well. There is a kit on ebay now. Bid was up to 25 something I think this morning. 2 days left. But it has a broken windshield frame and I didn’t know what the possibilities were for a replacement. I’ve seen the TF but don’t care for the headlights. I really like the 52 TD look. It speaks British roadster in volumes in my opinion. Since I’m a die hard VW guy I like the idea of the TD on a VW chassis as well. That way I can get both my fixes with the same vehicle.
I’ve seen finished cars on the Samba and Ebay ranging in price from 4K and up. I missed a great buy on a pristine one from Georgia awhile back for $4500.
I guess I’ll keep looking on this site as well as ebay and the Samba. Maybe I’ll get lucky. I’d like to stay in the 4-5K range if possible.
Thanks for the information.
April 10, 2009 at 2:13 pm #238629My personal opinion of eBay is not good. I’ve had a couple VERY bad experiences buying vehicles that were NOT what they were advertised to be. Getting satisfaction from the sellers or eBay was non-existent.
If you are looking at the one in KY, that’s adverstised as a Classic Roadsters Ltd kit. They were one of the better made kits. You can always buy a repro TD windshield frame. We have a forum member doing that swap right now.
At any rate, there is a vendor in Hollywood, FL called MG Magic. Their phone number is listed on this Forum many times. They have stock piled many TD replica parts. Before you buy a car with broken or missing parts. Why not verify what those parts are and see what MG Magic has in the way of replacements?
There are also things to consider to get your replica legally titled and registered. Every state is different. Ask questions here before you buy is good advice.

Here is more info on the MG TF replica that Mark mentioned. Alternative Cars from New Zealand. I’ve seen their car at the Carlisle show. Nice piece! Not sure of prices.

April 12, 2009 at 10:38 pm #238631That vendor in Canada wants a huge deposit too. They build only one kit at a time after they get your deposit. I think they wanted $10K down back then. I spoke to them a few years ago before I found the current project in Connecticut.
For Paul Mossberg: Speaking of “deposits”, I wonder if Frank Craig(NJRC) ever saw a dime of the $18,000 he sent to the guy in Milwaukee to build that 928 based “Cabriolet” thing? Remember that debacle?
The place in New Zealand prices were just over $18,000 delivered to the Los Angeles, CA when I spoke to Jim Youngs brother-on-law at the Carlisle show in 2003. I forgot his name, but it’s Jim’s wife’s brother. I believe he was located in Ohio, but don’t quote me. That car is a really nice piece too. Solid and it had leg room galore! I wish I had the $$ back then.
Tom, the Kentucky eBay car you were looking at is a a high quality kit too. But thanlss to Paul, we now know where there are at least two TD variant producers that are still active.
April 13, 2009 at 8:14 pm #238632Another place to watch for one is on Craigs List. Found several there. Red Ford version and a white VW style in the Cincinnati Oh area. The VW is still avaliable as far as I know, it’s a project though, pretty rough, but he only wanted 1500 for it. You have to search several ways, some people have no idea what they have, try MG, MGTD, Migi, MG TD, Kit Car just to name a few.
Guess I’m the newest newbee!! I just got my ’52 TD home Saturday. I’ll try to post pictures later. It’s the CMC version Ford 2300 engine, auto trans, has heat defrost and even AC, first one I’d seen with air. Mine’s Artic white with red interior. Not sure I like the automatic, but thats what it has. Had to buy it, got it for a song.
I do need to find a few things, missing a couple wheel centers off the basket wires, fuel gauge not working and one of the fender mirrors is missing (already order new ones from Moss). Anyone got any suggestions for the centers or fuel sending unit?
Thanks, Montie
April 13, 2009 at 8:33 pm #238633Hey newbie Monti,
Welcome aboard.
Please post your “centers” and “fuel sender unit” in two new posts, with topics that match the content.
You’ll have a far greater chance of getting a reply. And future forum searches will have a far greater chance of finding your topics, if they are searching for something similar.
To all…it bears repeating…if your question or commetn is straying form teh “topic” on the thread, post a NEW thread. ‘Nuf said here, since my comment too, has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.
And it wouldn’t hurt any of us to go back and read the “Read This Before Your Start Posting” message from FrankieD.
Just some friendly advice from a long-time forum member. 🙂
