I recently purchased a 1953 MG TD replica. The previous owner had very little information on the vehicle. Is there a way to determine the manufacturer? Do manufacturers provide any identifying markings on the vehicle?
Any information would be appreciated.
January 16, 2016 at 12:55 pm #266970The better (and more) pictures you post, the more information about your TDr you will receive.
I can almost guarantee you that we’ll figure it out.
January 16, 2016 at 1:09 pm #266971My FiberFab has a big “FF” logo molded into the cowl under the hood. That and finding a copy of a receipt from FiberFab under the seat made mine easy to identify. Failing that … you have to post pictures.
January 16, 2016 at 2:35 pm #266972welcome post pics & these guys will know exactly what make it is
January 16, 2016 at 6:05 pm #266973Early FiberFabs with the exposed steering shaft don’t have any identifying marks, AFAIK. It must be the later MiGi II that has the FF molded in…

Slowly coming back from the ashes...January 16, 2016 at 10:17 pm #266974The Head Light support arms for a Fiber Fab, are a curved flat bar, from what I have seen on other members cars. My Classic Roadster Dutchess, has the orginal MGTD round thick head light bar. You can also look at the photos of other members cars in the member profile area, as they list what kind of a MGTDr they have.

January 17, 2016 at 12:42 pm #266977Almost definitely a BCW. Nice find.
January 17, 2016 at 3:33 pm #266978I like the color combo. I don’t recall seeing another one like it. Definitely a unique approach on the dash layout. Wires!!

All around very nice car!
Sorry I can’t be any help with the manufacturer, though.Amor Conquista Todo
January 17, 2016 at 6:46 pm #266980Could be a BCW, but I don’t think so. This car looks like no other replica I have seen.
The wiper is up top, and it shows no plinth for them on the cowl. That is custom. The dash is BCW-shaped but everything in/on it is custom.Seats are not BCW, nor is any of the fabric in the interior BCW style. All custom. The fold down windshield could be BCW but it is mounted lower on the cowl–more like an original. So that is original, or custom. The gas tank looks like an original but the spare tire carrier does not. But it also does not look like a BCW spare tire carrier. So that is likely also custom-made.Top stays are original MG TD two-bow. That is not from any kit manufactured in the 70s or 80s.Tail lights are I-don’t-know-what. Very cool…This is a VERY INTERESTING CAR.Front engine car, I assume? What is the engine?edsnova2016-01-17 18:48:36
January 17, 2016 at 6:57 pm #266981Looks to be a front engined automatic transmission.
What manufacturer of TDr’s has concealed bonnet hinges other than BCW? That convinced me of its heritage. Granted, there are many customizations.
January 17, 2016 at 8:06 pm #266982This car also has no exterior door latches, no gas cap on the tank, the license plate looks like it would be on the drivers side rear fender, there are dual exhausts (VW engined). Front bumper is from an original car, no over-riders, front turn signals appear to be original with white (English) rather than amber crystals.I’m still pretty new to this but have a front engined BCW. My folding windscreen is mounted in the same location as the one in these pictures. Other non-folding windscreens are taller. Could this car have been modified for a movie or something (I’m thinking espacially because of the wiper placement) as a stand-in for an original TD?

South Orange NJJanuary 17, 2016 at 8:19 pm #266983Dual exhausts don’t indicate VW here, not with that transmission or with that floorboard. What strikes me is the incredibly good body panel fitment, the folding windshield, the wipers at the top of the windshield, the original-style top, and original style headlamp mounts. Never seen wire wheels like that on a replica, either. If all I saw was the bottom photo, I’d definitely call this a real TD. Is it possible this started as a real TD and was converted to run using another car’s engine and transmission?
January 18, 2016 at 12:43 am #266984Thanks for all the feedback. Found this replica on eBay and the previous owner was not a car guy so knew very little about the car or its history. He said he was the second owner and according to the VIN, it was built in Nebraska in 1999. Based on the timing cover codes, the engine is a 1974 Mustang II 2.8L. Have not identified the transmission, but it certainly looks like a 1974-era automatic from a Mustang. I am a Mustang enthusiast and saw this car at a price I could not pass up.
January 18, 2016 at 2:23 pm #266985Hi Andy,
Well…congratulations…on two accounts.
First, the acquisition of a great car.
Second…so far, you have stumped a very knowledgeable group! But we’re not done yet. We’ll figure this out!

January 18, 2016 at 6:44 pm #266986A V6 car? Cool. Gabe built one totally custom. The automatic should be a C3 or C4 assuming it’s only a three speed.

Car looks blue in the pictures. Actually it is more like teal.

January 24, 2016 at 3:34 pm #266988Some additional pictures of various items on the car:
January 24, 2016 at 3:45 pm #266989I can see that your rear fenders are molded to take the correct, early TD tail lights, but something bigger is bolted over them.
The headlight brackets look right too, though the wiring is non-standard. The wire “should” travel through the hollow bracket to the fenders, then through to the inside.Wire wheel hub adaptors are standard TR2-3-4, on 4 x 4.5 bolt centers. They look sharp. The car appears well detailed.January 24, 2016 at 9:36 pm #266990Tried finding what that speedometer and fuel gauge is from and only found a 1980’s Ford Escort dash. Doesn’t actually match though, especially because of the indicator lights. They were between the gauges not in them.
Also some kind of Ford truck with 85 MPH speedo, not really like yours.I thought I could narrow it down to a Ford and 85 MPH, nothing more could be found. You know it isn’t from a Mustang anyway, topping out at 85 MPH.January 25, 2016 at 7:16 am #266991For a minute on the early 80s every American car came with an 85 mph speedometer.
