It’s not really hard to see with the old lights. It’s just hard to see with the old lights when everyone else has these super-bright interrogation Kliegs shining out like supernovaes on the road. Our eyes can’t adjust that well ‘tween ’em, and it means we’re not well-seen either.I was thinking about this as I approached a person in an SUV who was…[Read more]

The tips on good grounds and proper wire gauge are good ones.
But there is also some truth behind Ed’s “how did we see in those days?” comment.I don’t have grounding or wire gauge issues in either the Duchess or my old Plymouth. But the truth is good old sealed beams may be old, but they certainly are not good. They pale in comparison (… -

As for the instrument lights being dim have you checked the light switch resistance? Remember that you can dim or brighten the instrument lights by turning the switch CW or CCW. At least on my TD switch you can. Anyway, could be the resistance is high and causing the lights to be dim.

I can’t see my guages at night and my headlights seem dim. I’m told that I need to check the ground for them.

Percy’s headlamps are OK. My problem with driving at night is that my gauges are too dim to see.

When I rebuild VW engines I always go up to 87mm pistons. And I let interested parties know that the mod is a straight “bolt on” mod and that drives the engine up to 1641cc giving it a little more kick from the red light. And you’re not changing the engine so much that the oil temps are significantly different. AND… the price for a 1600cc…[Read more]

My cylinders got bored bigger, but not up to 92, so it will be closer to 1776 than 1835 I suppose. The extra cooler is to try compensating for the extreme heat we get in the summer. But without A/C, I most likely won’t be driving it too much anyway. Fall, winter and spring are my times to enjoy top down fun.

You’re not going big enough to make yours a grenade. The guys going way over 2 liters are pushing things too far, imho, which is really h, btw. A lot of them would shout me down for saying it. 1776, 1835, 1915 isn’t crazy big and should do fine in these cars, if they’re built carefully and not driven in competition. Stock doghouse cooler should…[Read more]

It won’t add a thing to cooling except making you feel like you did something or it will increase you oil capacity slightly, like I said.

Marc Lipsius replied to the topic Gas line routing? in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 6 months ago
Mine was a new line run under the car from tank to the rear, goes up under the rear deck/fender area around the left hand side of the engine to the fuel pump, not through the shroud. No problem, easier to access.

Are you saying I won’t get much lif out of my new bigger engine with the added oil cooler? Will it degrade or harm the engine in any way?MGLondonRoadste2012-02-24 10:25:19

Rocky,
Ricardo’s tank is very similar. If your Duchess was built per the factory specs, the filler tube enters the tank at the top, left, front corner. It runs under the weight box at the front of the trunk, then up behind the grill to the “radiator cap”.This is VERY entertaining at gas stations! Dropping the gas nozzle into the rad… - Load More
